Hi Dog welcome to the forum. I have never used the chisles so I cannot say, but I am sure there will be a number of members who can.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum. I notice you put an embarassed emoticon after your question...'coz it's a bit late to ask for opinions after you've bougth 'em. I haven't used the Marples Record chisels but the real question is; what are you going to do about it if forum members slate them? You say that you are new to woodworking and presumably new to sharpening. Even average chisels will perform much better if really sharp. Have a search of the forum for a bewildering amount of information on sharpening techniques.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm sure they will be good chisels to get you started but as the previous poster suggested time spent learning to sharpen to a decent standard is a good investment. I am a relative newcomer but have learned a trumendous amount of useful info from postings on here. Cheers John

Hello and welcome :D
I've got Marples paring chisels and gouges, had them for nearly 30 years now.No problem at all.
Back then Marples i believe were the tools to have. All their tool were made in England i believe but now they are made in the far east. Not to sure of the quality of steel on them now.
But you've gotta start somewhere and start learning. If your not happy with them for you woodworking they will be used for something else.
Just see how they go :D

At 60 pence per chisel, how can someone new to woodworking go wrong?

I have a set of the Marples shatterproof chisels (yellow and red handles) and I think they are great. They take a lot of punishment and keep an edge well. I do keep them pretty shorp though and use the Veritas honing guide as I am c*ap at sharpening them otherwise. :D
