There are some very talented people who post on here and seem to be able to turn their hand to making more than just furniture. I'd like to try making my own marking or cutting gauge and would love to see a step by step "pictorial" of how to make one or both maybe using brass or something else as I don't know how its attached to the wood. Derek Cohen shows one here!

But doesn't really explain how to do it, hope you read this and maybe help with the request.

If you do a quick search for gauges you'll find quite a bit of stuff on how to make or modify your own gauges quite cheaply so that you can have lots of 'em for about half the price of a LN Titemark wheelthingie - Rob

I think there's also going to be an article on making your own marking/mortice gauges in the next issue of Furniture & Cabinetmaking magazine, which I believe comes out next week sometime?

There is indeed an article on this in the next issue of F&C Magazine, written by me.

The article covers what I have found good and bad in various marking gauges over the years and then brings them together in the gauge I now use myself.

One of the interesting features is that it uses a Swann-Morton scalpel blade as a replaceable cutting edge. A big part of the reason I developed this was cost, so the gauge is cheap and easy to make, meaning you can have enough of them to preserve settings throughout a project.

I'd be happy to discuss the finer details of this once people have had a chance to read the article.

Ed,

Thats interesting!
On my bench at this very moment is a WIP guage using a disposable scapel head.

I was given a box full ( my wife works at a GP practice) as they are beyond their use by date and were on their way to landfill.

Hi Ed, please excuse my ignorance, but what is the F&C magazine?
Regards Rich.
