Just to be sure, the two flanges are concave on my saw and there is a thick washer in between that the blade fits over, the two flanges tighten against the blade and keep it in place, tightness needs to be whatever you are happy with, but certainly two knuckles tight.

I will try to post a picture tomorrow of my blade setup, from what you have described I think the thick washer is missing from your saw, I suggest you do not try to start your saw until you are certain the blade is correctly attached.

Thanks Mike, My setup is like yours but instead of the thick washer you describe, Im using the washer thing that I got from Owen along with the blade. The blade feels solid I just wasnt sure how much to tighten the flange.

thanks

Colin

What you got from Owen was a bore reducer, designed to fit in the bore hole of the saw.

What Mike is talking about is a flange that is designed to be larger than the bore, and (along with the nut) to clamp the blade tight against the opposing flange. If you have all of that and the blade is rock solid, you should be OK. It should be pretty tight, but no need to go crazy on it.

I'd recommend waiting for the pics from Mike though just to check. Or can you post a pic of your own here?

Pic (I hope) shows the washers, the thick dark washer is the spacer between the two concave large washers that fits into the saw blade bore, the silver washer is what you have probably been sent, its not wrong, its for a table saw I think, but it will not allow the blade to be kept in place central between the two concave large washers, you need the thick dark washer.

Edit to add new pic as Photobucket no longer works.

Exactly the same setup as mine apart from my flanges are black. I could be wrong but I think the thick black washer is needed in order to work properly with the flanges. This, I assume, is why Makita say the machine needs a blade with a 30mm bore even though the arbour is smaller:

Having said that if it were me I'd probably give it a go with the thinner washer and see how it works. There should be no risk of the blade coming loose, as long as the flanges are properly secured with the arbour bolt nice and tight, and if the blade runs true then you're golden!

I think the thinner washer will move sideways away from the saw blade bore and allow the blade to drop, it may work if you reverse the concave washers, but only if they tighten against the blade?

Mike

Thanks Mike, Youre right, I have all you have but am missing the thick black washer. I have looked online and I can buy that for a couple of quid so will get it ordered, better to be safe than sorry.

thanks

Colin

From the technical specs ...

North America : 15.88mm (5/8'')
Europe : 30mm (1-3/16'')
Others : 25mm or 25.4mm (1'')

confused-dot-com? :-D

Thanks your lucky stars that you asked the question and eventually found the right information, if the blade whilst running had lost its central location between the concave washers, which could have happened with the thin washer, the resulting vibration and misplacement at best it could have destroyed your saw guard at worst it could have detached itself from the saw and hit you, just goes to prove there are no stupid questions.

Mike

Youre right Mike, but as im starting to get into this I had to ask the question and believe me theres going to be tons more!

One thing to note is I dont have a safety guard, it never came with it.

thanks again

To be honest mate, I would never use a chop saw without a safety guard. Those things are arguably the most lethal tool in the shop due to the constant proximity of your hands and arms to the blade.

I'd seriously consider not using it until you order and fit the spare parts :)

thanks guys, im still waiting on the replacement washer thingy so cant use it. looking at the link Mike posted I am missing the following -

79 - spring
80 - Guard
81 - Washer
82 - Bolt

So I will look into getting them bits.

thanks

Colin

No Mike I already have those pieces as well as number 76.

Just ordered all 4 parts from Miles Tool for only £24 delivered so should get that early next week.

thanks

As bad as a feral router on a wobbly stool? :-D

LOL and the router video is just asking for trouble, I wouldnt meaningly put my hands that close to a spinning blade on a chop saw but understand what youre saying so I have purchased the parts needed.

Lock Knob arrived today, PITA to fit as you have to take the arm of the saw off the main part but now its fitted so thats a bonus. One thing though is the thing that locks the arm (link plate?) when the saw is at highest point it doesnt seem to lock, the hole or the pin doesnt seem to be fully alligned. Anyone know if theres a way to adjust this?

It does locate if you move it up and down around that point but not as it should normally do.
