Looking to buy a replacement router for a UKJ lift without a NVR switch?

I have a cast iron UKJ router table and fitted a Dewalt 625 router to it.

I had an Axcaliber extention collet fitted so the collet would be above the table top.

Not sure what happened but the extention came loose and the router has not sounded right since. I havent used it for a while so decided to have a look at it and it seems something has bent. It has a 1.5 run out!

I watched a few videos on replacing the armature and it seems a right pain so looking for a new router.

The problem is the new model Dewalt DW625 has a built in NVR switch and I already have a NVR on my router table. So i think it would be a pain to try to reach down inside the dust box to turn the router on all the time?
I would prefer to use the NVR on the router table.

Also to get my old Dewalt DW625 to fit i had to remove the handles, but the new Dewalt DW625 has the switch built into the handle so not sure if it would be a problem?

The Axminster UKJ router lift manual is a bit sketchy on which models will fit and lists older models.

So not sure which router to buy as a replacement?

I watched a few videos on replacing the armature and it seems a right pain so looking for a new router.

Lay the router on a clean worktop and replacing the armature is probably not as bad as you envisage. First job is to remove the top cover to allow removal of the brushes and then the screws at the other end to release the nose bearing cover along with the armature whilst keep the rest undisturbed.

The older model is probably a better machine so you just need to decide if the cost of a new armature is worth it.

The armature shaft with the collet & nut fitted, only protrudes about 25mm from the body of the router on the DW 625,.....are you sure that it's the armature shaft that's bent and not just the collet/ nut that's causing the issue of the run-out..?

Hi thanks for the reples, I had another look at it and ran it without the extension and it seemed more true, maybe its the extension that is bent?

I may try one of the Muscle chucks in it as its been a pain trying to tighten both collects etc..I believe you can buy a extended version of the muscle chuck? Can not find a measurement on how much it extends it

Hi @dvddvd The Muscle Chuck 2E fits the Dewalt 625 and Elu/Trend equivalents, it will extend the length by around 15mm ideal when used with the JessEm Prestige Lift. How much height loss is there on the UJK?

I bought a cast iron topped Charnwood router table a few years back and it came with a NVR switch and a 1/2" collet extension as part of the package.......I've never been tempted to use the extension as the thought of that thing coming loose at 20,000 rpm does not appeal to me in any way....!

Check the run out of your router without the extension and you may well find it's just the extension that's out......Even if the router collet/nut is distorted, it's certainly going to be loads cheaper to replace those than buying a new router...!

With the collet on the Dewalt DW625 tightened and the lift in the highest position, the top of the collet is 18mm lower than the top of the table?

A problem you may encounter if trying to replace the armature is availability of the part. I had a Dewalt 625E type 6 in my router table. A year ago the time came when it sometimes failed to start and when I dismantled it I found the commutator in poor condition, gummed up and with a chipped copper element. It's all one with the armature, and the type 6 part is no longer available in 230v. The part for the 115v machine was available at that time and perhaps that or a different type is what you need. The local electric motor specialist wasn't interested in trying to repair my commutator so I ended up with a new router. Lesson? inverted 625 needs to be cleaned occasionally.
Anyone need an Incra router table insert for Dewalt 625?
Anyone got a Dewalt 625 type 6 with a good armature but broken in some other way?

I have an Erbauer router under my router table with a built-in NVR switch. I've just held it in the 'on' position with a cable-tie. Crude but simple.

@dvddvd I have a Hitachi MV2 mounted in a UJK router lift with Musclechuck and it has worked well for about twelve years, used raising panel bits without problems, uses a separate NVR switch and fits the existing bolts on the lift, seem to be exactly what you need.

I think you will find that before routers had built in NVR switches that they were just pluged in like anything else like my DW625. An issue might arise if whilst you are using the router and you get a power cut that if you fail to turn it off then when the power comes back on it would just start up again. But like most people I would turn it off and then look to see why it stopped and then realise a power cut, not just walk away and leave it turned on. Having a built in NVR switch in a router is not required, my 9 inch grinder does not have one and it has a trigger lock !

I read somewhere that the law changed in 2022 and its now law, hence all new routers have a NVR switch. Trouble is that my router lift is a tight fit for most routers and the handles have to be removed..the old style routers had removable handles which were a piece of plastic but nowadays they seem to have a switch built into the handle so not as easy

Ive also heard about the regs change meaning all new routers need an NVR. I also have the Axminster iron worktop and went for a Trend T14EK which has an NVR on a cable so it can be attached to the side of the table rather than fiddling around underneath. Would highly recommend. Its also got a top height adjuster, so never any faffing around below the table.

I also bought a Musclechuck which has been a game changer, its so easy changing bits with that single handedly. Some also have a small extension in them too I think.

Usually have to buy access though so I haven't gone in to check myself, i've just taken it at face value given all routers have built in NVRs these days

Don't know about the new law and incorporated NVRs but I have the same Axminster router table and a Triton router which works well, it doesn't have an inbuilt NVR.
