Hi, im not sure if im posting in the correct section here, but i havent had a workshop available since 2020 and all of my tools/equipment have been sat in storage ever since.
i have moved up the country to birmingham since then, and internet searches for workshops generally throw up warehouse sized or at least small commertial properties that i can not afford without setting up a business to go with them.
does anyone on here know of anyone with a small workshop available to rent near selly oak? must be secure, with electric (3phase preferable) and if possible water + WC.
size wise ideally the size of a double garage would be brilliant but just enough for my lathe, pillar drill and a couple of motorbikes.
back down in dorset i knew a lot of farmers/land owners so it was a word of mouth situation but not so easy up here.
any info or advice would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Josh.

I can't help I'm afraid...but am curious. Would a garage do?

I also can’t help you with a workshop to rent but you are in the best place to get help . Given the likelihood of high prices could you build one at your home or even consider a large shed or shipping container. I’m guessing a years rent + your storage costs would would be a lot more than buying a decent sized shed and getting 3 phase installed.. good luck

Local farms are always a good place to start. Not normally luxurious but can serve a purpose.

Any structure in Selly Oak meething those criteria will be used more profitably as student accommodation.

You might have to look further out, like Longbridge, King's Norton, Druid's Heath.

Spend the day driving around a bit. Google maps satellite view might be a good place to do some armchair reconnaissance.

ive found a few units near me that are way more size wise than i need (1500sqft) with 3 phase roller door the lot for ~700/750 a month all inclusive, but half that space would be more than enough for me, is anyone in a similar position that might be interested in going halves? split space/rent down the middle?
bit forward but cant hurt to ask haha :)

as to farms that was my initial idea (i come from rural dorset so my workshop down there was on a horse yard) but im uninsurable for the next year or 2 unfortunatly so im limited to public transport/bicycle at the present time.

I suppose yer still on the hunt, for workspace, and I am not in the UK,

When I lost my shop I had to find space to work in here in Calgary.(Alberta Canada.)

Found this place...

quick video tor here

The video is dated, but in last few months, we've spent about 8k$ CDN with additions/upgrades, which would tax even the most prudent fiscal mgmnt of a small workshop.

Been a member for 7+ yrs, on board of directors x4.

It's incredibly expensive....55$CDN, which is about 40us$ for access to the space 24/7

These places are commonly called "makerspaces" of "Fablabs", or maybe "communal workshops" I dunno...be clever searching,
but incedently all the major tool suppliers know about us

Downside is that there are rules/policies etc , but after working for myself x40 years, I found no problem to adjust. moreover by taking inexpensive course offered, I've really upgraded my metalworking -lathe/mill skills.

So I urge you to go looking at this avenue.

Eric in Alberta

Kings Norton isn’t far from Selly Oak and there are several farms there. Maybe worth investigating. There are also some smaller units around Stirchley although they may be more expensive nowadays. Gumtree is worth a look, there’s usually some smaller units on there.
