I work in IT and dabble in woodwork in my free time.

Got some plans to make a few things soon, but first a new workbench is in the cards

Welcome. A workbench with a vice is a sensible starting point, I 'managed' for several years with just table and always claimed it was fine. I added a leg vice to it and my woodworking was revolutionized.
