Hello, I was wondering if someone here could help me. I am looking for a lock to attach to a cupboard with double doors like the one shown in the image below:

It doesn't have to be too robust. It would just be a deterrent to prevent my alcoholic son from accessing my husbands bottles of spirits. I have searched the internet but wasn't too sure the locks I found would work for such doors.

Thank you

Sorry imho you would just be wasting your money putting a lock on,it could easily be forced open and would be little or no deterent to someone desperate for a drink.

A bolt on the inside of one door and then a standard lock fitted to the other, being received by a plate on the bolted door would be the most secure option.

I have to agree with Mark though, Removing the spirits to a safer location (if they're of value) or entirely (if they're not) is probably a better option, less risk of damage, less temptation for your son until he's able to get to grips with his condition.

Best of luck, can't be an easy situation.

Thanks for your suggestions. I know my son wouldn't damage any property no matter how desperate he was, that is why I thought any kind of limit to accessing to the alcohol would help. At the moment it is just too easily available when we are out of the house or a sleep so a simple lock would deter him from accessing it.

I was wondering if something like this would be good to lock the doors:

Between me and my husband, we have basic diy/carpentry skills so could manage to fit it ourselves. I just don't want to purchase something that wouldn't stop the doors opening at all

Sorry, but it seems like I am not able to post a link to the actual product.

Thank you.

PM sent re lock. I didn't say though, that I agree; a sliding bolt on the inside of one door makes everything much more secure and rigid.

Wow. Thank you very much Neil for being so kind and generous in your PM. This forum may not be the most appropriate place to say this and at the risk of sounding overly emotional, I can't tell you how much it fills me with hope and warms my heart that someone I have never met would be willing to help me with the problem I shared, in the way you did. I would most gratefully accept your offer, if you would allow me to call it that, but I was eager to get a suitable lock and went and ordered the components that Chris suggested in his forum reply. It looks like quite a robust solution and I would be secure in knowing it could not be easily tampered with if he was so tempted. My son is not a bad lad, he would never damage belongings we own but his drinking has gotten out of hand after he started using it to try and deal with the problems in his life. Again let me say how much I appreciate your message of help and I hope you don't mind me using the forum to reply to your message, as when I tried to PM you a reply I got a message that I was not authorised to use such a feature, since I had just registered here and needed to participate more to be able to. But again, Thank you and take care.

First you will need to hold one door closed so use two of these, one at the top and one at the bottem

Then on the other door use one of these (Stockcode: N1222 ) on the top line

You will need a 16mm drill bit to fit this though.

Hope this helps

Thank you Chris. I ordered these locks you suggested. Also thanks to everyone else who took the time to reply.
