Ta. :)

at about £15 that seams a good deal

but i must say i prefer the 077 because of the detachable nose and the adjusting knob on the blade

Yours does look like a better model. That fine adjust be nice.

Have you found much use for it ? Find the need to tune it much ?

I can't seem to find any info for these planes on the net. Bit surprising. Thought I'd be able to find something just with a search.

:)

Hey up, Jake. There's a terrible lack of Record info on t'net I'm afraid. Anyway, fwiw, the 076 was originally a design by Edward Preston (who as you probably already know were bought out by C & J Hampton aka Record) with the model number 1366. Introduced as the 076 in 1933 and ceased production some time between 1972 and 1980. A list of prices I have from a few years ago suggests £20-50GBP, so I reckon you did okay. How useful it is? Well it's a bit debatable how useful any bullnose is. Either you need it, or you don't. I think many people, myself included, use them for things other than strictly bullnose work.

Cheers, Alf

Thanks Alf.....(I probably didn't know any of that  )..... I thought it be of some use for fitting draws......taking shavings off the runners, to get them draws running nice......stanley 78 I found to be a bit clumbsy.

Yeah, should be fine. With your experience you'll be able to compensate for the lack of sole at the toe. The trouble comes when novices buy a bullnose as a cheap way of getting a shoulder plane and then have terrible trouble registering the plane on the work at the start of the cut. Occasionally I delude myslf into thinking I have a clue what I'm doing, but a session with a bullnose after a long break soon reminds me not to be so daft.

Cheers, Alf

Hi Jake,

Replied on the Aussie site, but I'd just add that I think the screw adjustment on the #077 looks more useful than it is. I don't think you will have any problems adjusting yours.

Cheers

I suspect it "sounds" like a fancier tool. It's the long name.

"bullnosed shoulder plane" sound more gizmoid than "shoulder plane".

As you say, they're not the most used tool in the box.

BugBear (with Stanley #76 and Record #077a, both fully tuned and infrequently used)

Maybe. Although you have to try and put yourself in the unusual position of buying a tool from a catalogue, at which point price becomes more of an issue I reckon.

Cheers, Alf (with just a Preston 1355 - I think. Really going to have to break down and get that Preston catalogue reprint)

And a Preston 2509...

I find the thing useful for the blind rebates. But I also use it for quick rounding over like a block plane if it's at hand anyway. More comfy than all but the little LN 102.

Take care, Mike

Cute looking little plane. I'd like to have one just because.
Lack of an adjuster won't do you any harm. On most tools, the need for an adjuster is overrated anyway.
