Having put aside the router when making for pleasure I am now approaching cutting my first dadoes by hand. I have read some bibles on how to do it and need a little guidance. Is the preparation for chiselling the sawing line done with just a sharp Stanley knife and a straight edge? Are there any hints and wrinkles to this or is it just keep the knife sharp and your fingers out of the way?

Essentially, that is the way to do it. But I would not use a Stanley knife - the blade is too flexible and it will cut a V groove. You need a solid blade that is sharpened on one side.
