Measuring up my existing cabinets I noticed the backboard sits about 50mm in from the back of the unit, giving an internal depth of 550mm in a 600mm deep unit. Is there a reason for the 50mm freespace?

That's exactly what it's for so often in most kitchens a waste of space apart from behind a sink run.

Apart from the services its also so you can scribe to bent and less than perpendicular walls so you can easily fit the worktop and have an overhang. If the back was flush it would make this nigh on impossible with standard base units and 600mm worktop
all the best
