Thin 0.25mm guitar string type wire

Hi all,

I'm after sourcing about 20m of 0.25mm diameter steel spring type wire.
The closest thing I can think of would be a steel guitar string.

I'm not sure what the the correct search term would be.
Can anyone help?

As above, 'piano wire' or 'music wire'.

You will do well to work out what 0.25mm is in wire gauge number as not everyone lists in metric.

Isn't that rather thin for a musical instrument wire? Loads of sellers on EBay, just look for 0.25mm steel wire.

You may be right, but I thought it was more of a generic term - I can't imagine anyone making their own piano strings these days.

0.25mm is approximately the diameter of the high string on a set of ‘10s’ guitar strings. 0.010” = 0.254mm

Wow, just can't imagine plucking something that thin, wouldn't have thought it would be very good for your fingers. Guess that's why I am no musician

It isn’t Guitar players develop callouses after a while. Players who get over-enthusiastic before the callouses develop get bleeding fingers.

I use 9's which are obv even thinner. Some people even use 8's!

Ebay is probably your best bet. Here's a harpsichord maker who sells 9m lengths.

If you need a 20m length you might need to ask him for his supplier contact, or whether he can get longer lengths for you.

The clue might be the Roslau brand name in the listing.

We should also note that there are more than one different wire gauge systems in use - it is an area where confusion is a good possiblity.
