I can see those who picked up a Parkside lathe alongside the weekly shop thinking “ah-ha, so that’s how you’re supposed to it” or people getting a lathe for Christmas saying “At least I know how to rough down properly, I saw Kirstie doing it just before Christmas“.
At best it’s not good and IMO quite irresponsible

KHMC features crafters and semi artisans not tradesmen and master craftsmen, thats why its called Home Made, not like we all have a lathe hanging around though!

I also work for whats left of Startrite and my gaffers offspring was contacted through Instagram about appearing on the show as they have a degree in something rather specialist, the brief was to make something in 4 hours, many of the projects would usually take days or a week to produce, many corners were cut in that episode aswell nevermind safe practices but the exposure led to an instant job at a prestigious company literally 2 days after airing!

At the end of the day most the contestants were/are women, have a skillset to suit their products which is often basic and were asked to rush a job on TV, we made many specialist tools to aid in production and speed up the process to the point where it was more industrial than crafting, it seems everyone had done this just to complete the brief in time.

I watched this last week with the wife. I must admit the "usual" practice of the Presenter 'having a go' really annoys me, but in this case I was dreading the first "catch", it did not happen (at least not on camera). Obviously no basic safety instruction was given, especially with no hands in sight. I was half expecting the gouge to disappear between between the rest and the piece, with the handle flying anywhere.

On a similar subject we watched the latest "Escape to the Chateau" last night. **** Strawbridge bought a really , really old electric wood lathe for turning a finial. Although he appeared to have some idea on how to hold the tool ( a skewer I think), it was the array of drive belts, all exposed, within the work area that had me worried.

WTF!
Sure, fully accept that it was telly, but that short clip of K holding a 'chisel', was downright irresponsible, IMHO.
30 mins in, if anyone can bear to watch it without safety goggles on - even the TV screen won't be enough protection!

I've not see a single turner use a lathe with the centres so high. Quite odd.

Just watched this the other day and I’m shocked... how the hell the experienced wood turner allowed that to happen is beyond me... pressure from the production team aside, I’d have walked off the set as it reflects badly on her! There was zero control over that tool (take that as the gouge or Kirsty) and I think at one point I saw the gouge coming into the work before it was in the rest. I’m no expert... and I catch tools far more often than I should but even I could see that was a whole new level of wrong!

As an aside, I liked the concept of the rocket but thought it looked shabby... the leather whales won it for me!
