Yes I think you are on the nail. It would be so easy for some people to just look for the facts and get up to speed.
Public services need to balance the books just like everything else in life. A train or a bus has a ticket that you buy, the value of the ticket should reflect the cost of the service. Those who use the product should pay for the product, otherwise, which is the case now, the majority are subsidising the benefits of the few. Now, if the same level of infrastructure was available to everyone everywhere, I would buy into the argument. However, the nation simply could not afford the same level of subsidy for a service even if it existed that provided the same level of transport infrastructure as TFL for everyone. To explain it a different way, should a person from poor northern town or in the countryside be paying to subsidising city bankers riding the tube?
