just bought an old luna bandsaw, advice

Hi all
I'm pretty new to woodworking and i came upon an opportunity to buy an old luna bs320bandsaw, as i am building my collection, i decided to buy it. Anybody know were hi best place to get blades for it and what type should i get? Any other tips on setting it up, guides for it etc? Thanks

try the m42 blades from tuffsaws- I have one in my saw and it is fantastic for ripping and general purpose. It earned its keep yesterday when I hit some hidden metal.

thanks guys, so do you use your bandsaw often? What are the typical uses? Mainly for ripping?

i have only had mine a few weeks, and sold my table saw to fit it in. I have mainly used it for ripping- both boards to thickness/size and for making veneers.

mine is used for anything the table saw cant do lol
I cut veneers with it
Curved shapes
Tenons
odd shapes
Round shapes
deep ripping/cutting
cutting segments out for turning
and a host of other little odd jobs that just need a rough cut

If well set up and with a good blade, a bandsaw can do quite precision work, not just rough cuts.

I think those elderly Luna bandsaws were manyfactured by Ejca in Värnamo and thir products have a good reputation.

Also, I am sure there are a few things I can do in terms of giving this saw a service to get this operating to optimum level ?

Like you I'm a newbie and the first "proper" power wood working tool I bought was a bandsaw (following the advice on here). I don't even have a table saw and have no room to get one in and frankly, I only seldom miss not having one (I am building a small router table though).

If you're anything at all like me you'll use the bandsaw for just about every cutting job, just like someone above has said.

When I first got the bandsaw I knew NOTHING at all about them so again following the advice on here I bought Steve Maskery's DVDs. Honestly, the best 20 quid or so I ever spent, to the point that having spent several hours watching some bits over and over I now approach both setting the tool up and using it with complete confidence and excellent result (even though mine is a cheap & nasty Chiwanese thingy).

As your machine is secondhand it's a fair bet that it will need at least some adjustment (like mine did out of the box) so I would most strongly recommend you order those DVDs and wait until you've had a look at them before making a start with it.
Please note that I have no connection at all with Steve Maskery ("Workshop Essentials") except as a VERY satisfied customer.

Enjoy your bandsaw, (lucky bloke, we don't often get to see such SH goodies around here - Switzerland).

Thanks for the replies all, I am also thinking of adding a table saw to my setup.
What are the advantages that a table saw has over a bandsaw?

Maybe I should ask the above question in relation to my next project. I have purchased a 4ft x x 4ft 1.5" thick piece of beech kitchen worktop (somebody sold this to me as they decided to fit a granite worktop instead of it in their kitchen).

Similar to this:

I want to make it into speaker stands, by first cutting it up into strips. 4 strips will then be dowel'd together to create a column of retangular cross section. At either end of the column I will place a slab of wood to complete.

Question is, would it be just as easy and accurate to complete the required cutting for my projest on a bandsaw in comparison to a table saw?

Both will do a fine job, but it is fair to say that it is easier to be accurate on a tablesaw than on a bandsaw. But both need the right blade for the job and both need to be set up to perform to the best of their ability.
Personally I would not like to be without either.

Hi i to have just purchased a Luna BS320 i no i might be a long shot but did you get a manual for this machine, i need to do some small repairs to mine and would like to be able to refer to a book for the correct method .

Can't you get some aftermarket guides such as the Carter ones or some other brand and make them fit somehow?

I've used Tuff saw blades, but there are other brands around which are equally as good; just Google 'good bandsaw blades'...plenty of options - Rob

I had a bandsaw for 4 years before buying a tablesaw. If you want to know what a bandsaw can do, go to utube and type in "bandsaw box"

But long straight cuts are much easier with a table saw.
