Advice needed . #-o

My name is dez i was studying carpentry and joinery at leeds college for 3 years only as a adult learner so no apprentaship . i only gained a level 3 diploma. i htought this diploma would get me a job but as i found out the hard way no one wants to set on a joiner that has a diploma with no exsperience . what can i do to get employment? nobody wants a unexsperienced joiner and i cant get a nvq till i have a job.
im 31 now should i just keep driving trucks as boring as it is or should i keep trying? theer must be some diploma guys who have made it.
any advice would be greatly appreciated :shock

Welcome dez..
I know someone in the same situation. He eventually found work with a property maintenance firm. Refurbishing flats for private landlords.
Far from his dream job, but it did give him experience.
Shopfitting firms sometimes have temporary work. Unsociable hours, long way from home, it's not for everyone.
Perhaps a mod could move this for a bigger audience to see?

I'd say don't give up looking. Sure most employers might want experience but if you can some how sneak into the conversation you're loyal and wont be looking to leave when you're qualified it might help. I'd suggest a building firm that also does joinery would be the perfect solution. That's how I started off- on site, then as experience grew I was allowed in the shop more. I never did like site work much after getting a taste of workshop life. Best of luck ;) you sound keen as mustard !!!

Hi Dez. I was a carpenter joiner for 30 years. I left a career in the Merchant Navy to get married and the two don't go together. I went to college and got a CoG in carpentry and joinery. I got a job straight away afterwards and although I worked for lots of different companies as a subbie I eventually went self-employed working for myself and this is something you may consider. Maybe put some flyers up in the local shops, put a sign on your car. Once you have done one or two jobs word gets around. I once did a job in one road and ended up with 9 jobs in the same road. Don't give up, there is work out there, its just finding it.

cheers for the advice it gives me somat to think about and ill keep trying thanks again :D :D :D
