Congratulations! You've got a lot of nerve making the change, I often think that as you progress in a job and your wage increases [which you actively pursue] you become increasingly trapped. I'm approaching 50 and I'm thinking more about ensuring I'm not too skint in retirement so I'd be too scared to jump now even if I had a skill that would lead to a job I could enjoy. So I'll stick with a job that bores me.
I take my hat off to you.

Fantastic news Melinda. Really pleased for you. Hope it all works out as you would like. It does sound good when they go to the trouble of creating a position just for you.

Well done Melinda, you have obviously made a very good impression and, like all the other posters, I am delighted for you. If you feel like posting the occasional update I am sure we would all be very pleased to hear how you are getting on.

Jim

Brilliant News!

That has made my day reading that and I wish you all the best for the future and look forward to hearing how things go

Hi all

Well I've been in my new job now for 4 weeks now, so thought I'ld give you all an update.

The first day was terrifying!! having been in my last job for 17yrs, and being very good at it, knowing it inside out, and being second in command... going somewhere completely different, and being a trainee..... how I didn't pass out through fear is beyond me!!

The first couple of days, was... different. The manager was very busy, and I didn't see where I fit in. So when I was asked how I was feeling on the 3rd day.... that is exactly what I said!!

I was then put with another member of the cabinet makers to work with.... as a mentor if you like .... and it's got better and better!!

I feel like I fit in now, all the lads I think have accepted me, the boss is... in her words "very pleased and impressed, and I'm doing just fine"

I'm learning new things daily, am now able to complete some simple pieces on my own, but most of all.... I'm making furniture for a living!!!
I can't believe it. I started this year doing a job that I was becoming increasingly more unhappy in, and i'm ending it doing something In love...
Dreams can come true :D :D

It's so nice to read about someone who values craftmanship and where you are now is IMO a great place to learn about the skills involved in woodworking. I wish all the very best for the future.

Well done and as you say dreams can come try :D
Glad you now feel that you are fitting in
Maybe it will be my turn next year
