Hi all, has anyone got experience with the smaller JET drum sanders (10-20 and 16-32)? From what I can gather the machines are good if you get a good one, but there's lots of friday afternoon machines out there. Was going to buy second hand if I can find one but the quality control issues are off putting.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'lots of Friday afternoon machines', but for what it's worth, I have the Performax badged 16-32 and wouldn't be without it. It was bought second-hand, and once setup so the drum is parallel with the table (a faff and a half), it is very accurate.

Cheers,
Adam

"Friday afternoon" tends to go a lot faster after a few pints at lunch time to usher in the weekend, or similar rhetoric.

I was recently doing a bunch of research and can't remember where I first found this thread but it's useful anyway. The machines are generally well regarded but they have a quality control issue with undersized components on the rise/fall mechanism. If you are unlucky enough to get one with an undersized thread then it may strip the thread of the aluminium housing. Seems fixable if you have access to the correct machine tools but not something everyone can fix. If you can visit the seller then you could always take your calipers round and measure it. Not sure what other issues they might have but this cropped up in an afternoon of reading.

Don't know about the 16-32 but the 22-44 is all cast iron not Ali

I had been looking at a 16-32 for some time, and missed several on a well known internet auction site.
I finally bought one new for here:-
http://www.woodworkingcentreshop.co.uk/ ... ANDER.html.
The gentleman I dealt with was David, and I bought for £844.58. Yes it is a lot of money, but I decided to treat myself. It included the extension tables and delivery direct from Axminster/Brimarc. I do not know if he can repeat the price, but it undercut Axminster/Brimarc by £50 on the already discounted special offer price.
I have teamed it up with a good set of braked castors from here:-
http://www.internationalcastorcoltd.co. ... rch=Search
4 x code 80DRBH12PNSWB for £35.93 delivered.

I set it up this weekend, and although it is early days I am pleased. Just in the process of finding a good supplier of cloth backed abrasive at the moment.
