As exciting as having pieces of wood flying across the workshop is.. I've decided that it's about time I put a new conveyor belt on my Jet 16-32, but I'm having trouble finding a decent quality replacement. The replacement Hermes belts (from Axminster, etc), are cheap but seem to get terrible reviews, as they're thinner and less durable that the originals. The rubber belts also seem to get bad reviews, and at £75 they're not exactly a bargain.

I've have found some suitable, heavy duty/genuine replacements in the USA, but I wanted to see if anyone knows of a UK supplier?

I've got an Axminster ST-480 drum sander, which is a rebadged version of the SuperMax machine. The replacement belts for this are pretty good, I've heard there's a fair amount of commonality between Jet and SuperMax, maybe this gives you an option? Just a thought.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that :)

Resurrecting an old topic, I just wondered whether anybody managed to find a source for the 1632 conveyor belts?

Axminster now only seem to offer the cloth backed Hermes sandpaper belt, whereas I would also be keen to try a higher quality alternative.

Is there a higher quality alternative? I use the Hermes cloth backed loadings in a SuperMax and it gets used often and hard, processing saw cut veneers in really demanding timbers like Cocobolo, Indian Rosewood, Ebony, and African Blackwood. Seems to work okay for me. I acknowledge that the SuperMax has a particularly effective belt tenoning mechanism, but as long as the loading is kept taught I'm not sure how the Hermes product could be improved upon?

If you find anything better then please let us know, I'm always open to trying a better way of working.

whilst still researching this and still being on the original belt on my sander. Does the additional price for the sandpaper belt make it better than the rubber belt or as stated in the Axi blurb which states for the rubber belt:-

Heavy-duty feed belt for Jet and Performax 22-44 Plus drum sanders

Heavy woven backing with a textured synthetic surface

Outlasts conventional abrasive feed belts

Smoother feed rates, better surface finish

Improved accuracy when thicknessing

That's interesting, I didn't know there were alternative conveyor belts for Performax machines.

I'm onto my third conveyor belt on a SuperMax drum sander and by and large the regular product seems to get the job done. I don't take liberties when using it, 0.1mm cuts for really difficult timbers, 0.2mm maximum for easier hardwoods like Cherry.

However, the other week I did have a drum sander related cock-up that could possibly be due to the conveyor belt, I posted about it here,

So, thanks for that information, I'll take a look at those.
