My router locks up from time to time (3-4 times perweek) Netgear WPN824
My ISP is NTL and I have not made any network changes for several years.
Firmware is up to date according to the router itself.

The only fix is power cycling the router.

Now I can provoke the problem reliably.
Trying to view the competition entries thread will lock it up everytime!

https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... hp?t=35550

I can only think that the large number of look-ups to photo hosting sites is causing the problem.

Anyone else have trouble with this thread or any suggestions??

HELP!

Bob

I always switch my router off over night every other day

Power it up with a re boot , never had a problem , I am also on NTL / Virgin

Prior to re booting , If I left it on for weeks / months I would have problems , when I rang Virgin that's what they recommended

Also had problems when my history file got too big , so I now clear the history once a week , bit of a pain as it removes all my passwords , but it only takes a short while to do them again

Thanks Allen,

I am effectively re-booting every other day anyway when I locks up.

I assume you can view the link to the competition thread without problems?

I don't think it would be a history problem as all the other users (4) on the network are using different browsers and have different browsing habits also when the router locks, all users are affected and rebooting individual machines does not sort the problem.
Also the problem can be triggered from any user.

Confused of Romsey

I'm on Virgin as well and have had to re-boot mine every now and then. More so when moving the wireless laptops between the 2 wireless lans (not on every occasion).

I wonder if you can do a hard reset of the router? Normally there will be a small button that can be pushed with a bent paper clip or such. You will lose any setings but if there is a problem with the running firmware that should sort it whereas a simple reboot may not.

If you have flashed the router to the latest firmware and the problems started after that that you might like to try reverting to the older version of the firmware. In my experience upgrading to the latest firmware has caused as many problems as it's fixed and I only now do it if I have an acutal problem that I want fixed.

Thanks for the ideas

The router has never been flashed from new as it had the latest fill when installed and self checks as not needing an upgrade as checked by contacting netgear by itself.

A hard reset has not fixed the problem.

I' like to find a fixed DNS server to try but don't know if free ones exist?

I never ever power cycle my router as it builds a line profile over several days which is lost when you power cycle the unit.

Street lights switching on can be a real killer for ADSL2 bandwidth

Bob, google freeDNS

I'd suggest that power cycling your router every night will cause you to loose connection speed. When the router comes back up, they tend to be a little pessimistic, negotiating a baud rate with the exchange modem and then "fine tuning" this connection rate over the next few days. Generally modems start off slower than necessary, then ramp up the speed until connection drop-outs are seen. Then the speed is "backed off" slightly. By power cycling, you are stopping the router from "learning" the line characteristics.

of course the algorithms used to characterise the line are different between manufacturers

Hi Steve,

I'm on cable so none of this flaky adsl stuff!!

I got a DNS server address off a mate about an hour ago and am running on that.

I have also reset the router back to factory settings then restored a backup of my original settings.

So far so good and with the exception of one set of pictures that are privately hosted by one entrant, I've been able to look at all the competition entries.

Fingers, knees and toes crossed!!

note to self, must read posts....

well if it were ADSL I'd suggest not powercycling it

freeDNS is really quite good.......

I'm using a linksys wireless G router on Virgin cable and haven't power cycled it for at least 4 months now. When i do it is usually only to find virgins connection was down and nothing wrong with the router at all.

If yours has a fault you can reproduce then it may be a known issue. Could be worth checking the makers website to see if there is a firmware update for it.

I have a router provided by Sky. I get the feeling that my connection is slower than when using the previous Netgear and BT Broadband. I switch off (is power recycling nerdy speak for switching on/off?) the router and PC every night as I'm concerned about overheating of both router & PC. I'm sure that I lost one of the hard drives last year because of overheating and now run the tower with side panels removed (no kids or pets in the house). Can anybody recommend a good, fast router which is easy to setup.
Sorry the hijack the thread.

The SKY router is just a rebadged Netgear isn't it?

I thought the Sky router was a rebadged Sagem. I do remember reading about 'poor performance' and 'poor wireless coverage' with the Sky hardware and that Sky insist you only use the kit they provide attached to 'their' broadband connection. I don't think they actually tell you your username and password, though there are ways of finding this out to (unofficially) use your own hardware.

Quote from Sky router forum

"Sky Router

Below you will find a list of discussions in the Sky Router forums here at Sky User - The unofficial support forum for everything Sky! The Sky Router forum Discuss Sky's Netgear DG834GT / DG934G and Sagem F@ST 2504 Routers here"

Seems we were both right :D

I knew the one I had seen was definitely a Netgear just with a Sky faceplate.
