I remember reading an old man saying he was very fortunate, he was at secondary school during WW2, he was taught woodwork by a retired cabinet maker and metalwork by a retired blacksmith.

I suppose I was fortunate, I had two good teachers - a great master at school who taught me how best to do things and a carpenter I worked with for years who taught me how best not to.
 
Haha, the Haynes book of lies😂. Even better when you dismantle an auto gearbox and find the assembly instructions INSIST you must use a new circlip/roll pin/o ring/whatever when you've got the bloody thing back together!

I still have my Haynes Mini manual from the early 70s, dog-eared and full of oily fingerprints. It helped me keep my old Minivan running when money was tight. A real life-saver. My wife worked on Saturdays thankfully - it saved her from the sight of me de-coking a cylinder head or restoring an SU carb on the kitchen table of our rented flat. Happy days.
