Hello,
I share a very small Instagram page with my ten year old daughter, she takes a few photos and videos of us making stuff (poorly).
macetown_wood it is called just to prove how misguided we are.
It was just my way to introduce she to the Interweb, to show her to be careful.
It is set up in my name so maybe this is the problem.
How to stop all the little wannabe pornstars messaging with links to Onlyfans.
Now I don’t care what they do on Onlyfans, they not my daughter, but when my daughter can’t go and see if her editing of our video has got ten views I do.
I am not very good with technology so hopefully there is a very simple solution.
Thank you.

Unfortunately there isn't really much you can do, I regularly have my posts liked by fake accounts that have no posts but still manage to have thousands of followers. It has become a sad part of being on there.

You can report and block them but they create a new account every time. Is your account verified with the blue tick? My unwanted attention seemed to start when I verified my account.

Try this. Click on your avatar or logo at bottom right to go to your profile, then the three lines at top right. Scroll down to ‘hidden words’ in the ‘how others can interact with you’ section, then ‘custom words and phrases’. From here you can hide comments and hide messages, create a laundry list of inappropriate words, phrases etc.. etc.. It’s far from infallible, but it’s what’s available. 🤷‍♂️ HTH. P 👍

Thank you Peter, I have found my way there. Your videos are a great help also.

People keep telling me to get an instagram account. Things like this make me want to avoid it like the plague ( which is my initial feeling anyway to be fair ) .

"Plague" is the correct description of the many so-called "social media" channels infesting the intrawebbery. This is becoming more obvious by the day, even to the many addicts scrolling and thumbing at their mind-trapping gizmo as they shuffle about a physical world that they no longer really notice.

Personally I've avoided them all, these cesspits, excepting one-forum-like-this at a time, devoted to special interests and with a minimum of the evil exudations dripping out of the likes of Xitter and Fyesspuke into reality. Long ago I had one week with a Fyesspuke account because the cycling club I belonged to devolved to it as its single channel of club comms. One week of the leakage of all sorts of meme-effluent, even into a cycling club group, was enough for me! Deleted!!

One comes across the deleterious effects of these anti-social media channels more and more in the everyday lives still lived, just, in reality. People have changed, at the macro level, for the worse in the last 30 years. So has the world at large and although there are many factors driving humans back to the default of inter-tribal hatreds and persecutions, anti-social media has been a big factor amongst the many other factors. It amplifies them immensely.

Instagram is great for woodworkers that want to generate sales from social media but that comes with the stress of having to filter through the inappropriate accounts trying to follow you.

I have made great relationships with other furniture manufacturers on Instagram so it isn’t all bad.

A Curate's Egg - "Good in parts, my lord".

This is perhaps the critical attribute of such "services" - they have inbuilt rots and infections that cannot really be separated out from the good parts. You get the lot, no matter how much effort is devoted (and wasted) on trying to avoid the awfuls.

It used to happen with old fashioned newspapers. Still does, amongst the shrinking number of readers of the nasty things. "I only get it for the sports reports". But the rest somehow gets swallowed as well, with the entirely predictable effects on the buyers' outlooks on things. Observe any Daily Hate Mail reader and "their" opinions.

@macetownhouse - well done for taking the initiative to teach your daughter about the good and bad of social media (it’s here to stay) and also in getting her interested in making things.

I also agree with the point that Instagram is a good way to get to know other woodworkers. Yes, you need to do a bit of housekeeping on followers etc but it’s worth it.

Ps You’ve some good videos on there and I’ve given you a follow!

Thank you for both of us.
