Good work Aled, bet you're pleased with that. Are you going to experiment with a Norris style adjuster too?

Thanks for your comments guys.

Unfortunately the ammount of work (and risk) involved with the tapping of the 20 holes in the sole means that I won't be offering this plane as a kit. In fact I doubt that I'll make a plane using this construction method again.

I am however considering making another similar plane using the more traditional dovetailed method, but with a steeper pitch just for the hell of it.

A kit may then be developed from that plane in the distant future, but don't hold your breath, I need to get the milling of the mouth right for the small smoother before moving on to anything bigger.

My little kit venture is just a hobby, so unfortunately progress can only take place in very small increments as and when time allows, family/life/work always seem to slow things down.

Cheers

Thanks Ironballs

As it happens, the harp making company just down the road from work have a really clever "moving head lathe" that could be used to make such a thing.

I'd like to incorporate an adjuster in the next plane, but to be honest this plane is dead simple to adjust just by using a small brass hammer that I made.

We'll have to see.

Looks excellent Aled. You must be delighted with the result, even if the route there has been a little challenging.

The various bits of reading I have done over the last few years on blogs and forums has made me realise the extent of engineering skill required to produce such a thing to an accurate standard.

Thanks Ed

Yes I'm delighted by the result, so much so that I'm even considering selling my Veritas Bevel Up Smother, I never did really get on with the A2 irons anyway.

As regards the engineering skill, the basics are pretty straightforward, it's just a case of cutting, filing, driling etc. Yes each operation needs to be done accurately, but with a little patience I'm sure that most of the people on here could produce a plane to a good standard.

As I tell all my students, if you can measure and mark out accurately, you're already over half way there. I'm sure that you have these skills in abundance.

The tools required to make such a plane are also fairly simple, you could make a plane with just a bench vice, hacksaw, files and a pillar drill. In fact, I don't think that Bill Carter even has a pillar drill.

Funny that you should mention that HC. I had my signature made into a stamp by a company in the US, but I've not got round to stamping it onto the lever cap yet. I'll do it tonight.

I finaly got round to stamping the lever cap, which was a two minute job. Photographing it however was something else.
