Quite, especially where the European (and to a lesser extent now, British) engineering is actually much more sophisticated in many ways than the US (lower case) norm.

I have heard the Americans say "nothing is made in the USA anymore" , perhaps the parts of these saws are factored out like many things here.
So where do the Delta saws come from these days?

Neil, after spending the last 18 months or so working in the US, where i used the Unisaw on a couple of occasions, i have to say that IMHO you have got a good deal.

Why? If we start with the cost then a Woodford Xcalibur 806 clone with the optional arbour extension and dado set would cost you around £1419.95 (including the 21% VAT in Ireland and delivery), which is around £300 cheaper than the Unisaw, but if you count the £166.98 of extras you got with your saw then the £133 price difference is not very much at all, especially when you think that you have got a original Normster and not a copy. 8)

It may not have a sliding table, but neither does the Xcaliber as standard, and if you want to buy one for the 806, it will send the cost up to £1870. And lets face it, if the Woodford is a exact clone of the Unisaw and you really want a sliding table in the future, then the one for the 806 may fit.
One thing that i had noticed about the hobby woodworker in the US is that a lot of them use sleds instead of sliding tables.

As others have said, I do not think that you can compare the Delta to the Scheppach, but one thing that i have found with my 2500 (old style) is because the mitre slots are non standard you cannot buy and use out of the box accossories such as the Osborne EB3 mitre gauge, a lot of Incra products, and even tenoning jigs. If you want to use any of these you have to adapt them. On the other hand it seems that they make every sort of accessory for the Unisaw.
I do not know if the new Scheppachs have the same problem?

All in all i do not think there is anything wrong with importing the Unisaw, even if it does cost a few hundred more and because of the great distance, it is going to be a hassle if anything wrong.
As far as i can most New Yankee Workshop lovers want a Unisaw because Norm uses one, and it is because of this that it now has its clones.

The most important part of buying this table saw is that Neil wanted one, and if he gets the emense please out of using the saw as i did when i used one on the other side of the pond, then i am sure he will find that it is worth every penny.

Good luck with your new toy Neil, but don't grow a beard and wear plaid shirts :norm:

Cheers

Norms getting a bit of a bashing

IMHO no matter what anyone says about Norm, he is unequaled in bringing more people in to the hobby of woodworking than anyone else. Like him or hate him he has certainly left his mark.

Glad to see that the reaction has been mainly positive. Just to answer a couple of things that have been high lighted.
I placed the order last October and had it within a week.
Maybe the comparison wasn't the right one but I only used it because the 4010 was mentioned in another thread.
I wouldn't really be bothered with a sliding table as the mitre slots and sled work just as well for me. Also I ordered an Osborne EB-3 last week which my brother in law is bringing home from LA at the end of the month.
One thing I do want to do soon is build some kind of over head blade guard as I find it a bit of a pain taking on and off the supplied guard. I tend not to use it at all as a result   .
Neil

For the money this isn't bad:

Building one with extraction and good materials is going to cost at least 60 dabs anyway. Although you do get what you pay for it works well as a guard and takes care of the dust from the top of the blade. It's just a re-labelled PSI but happy enough.
