Looks pretty and slowly takes you apart :)

Possibly the 1st of many, thanks goes to "Custard" and Paul Sellers :D

Lots of 120 grit, lots more 240 grit and a complete grinding of the iron. all is now ship shape, but i think it needs a bit more of an edge.

Looks nice.

Have you refurbished it? I only ask as I am mid process and was wondering what paint you used if any?
(I know the BS Roundel Blue number but hoping for a more 'high street' equivalent!)

the paint was in pretty good condition, the rest was quite rusty which i got rid of with sandpaper.

couple of things that helped me, I bought a granite worktop saver from sainsburys for under £20 which is pretty flat, not engineer flat, but flat enough.

Also made use of the karcher steam cleaner with plastic and wire brushes for cleanup. worked a treat. took me about 2.5 hours to bring it from "used" to this.

Nicely done. Satisfying isn't it!

Which version of the blue are you after? Early, middle, late or current?

Apparently there's a straight gloss (non-hammered) Hammerite paint that's a perfect match for one of them, it's mentioned in a few older threads here but that'll only work if it's the particular colour you're going for.

I can't find this locally so I'm going to have to mix a paint myself. Thankfully that's easily done starting with French Ultramarine oil paint, which uses the same pigment used to make the original versions of Roundel Blue.

Nice job on the plane Craig, looks nice and clean. Any before pics so we can see the transformation?

This can be very addictive, you might find yourself buying something rusty just so you can do the restoration work on it. Or maybe that's just me :)

bugger....

I knew i should have done that. it got delivered to the office and i literally started on it when i got home before even a cuppa :(

Next time ill be doing that for sure.

i need to get some decent stones, any recommendations that arent £120 each?

Looks a great job. Well done. =D>
Theres a recent thread (or three) on cheap ultex diamond stones from ITS. You can find them by entering 'ITS diamond' in the search engine on here. One is an in depth review from Custard. I'm not experienced enough to give advice by a looooong way but using them (with a bit of finishing on silly number wet and dry) was the first time i got a blade I made out of O1 sharp enough to be a little scared of it. For some reason I can't really fathom I could never really achieve that edge on my waterstones. Im sure its my fault and I'll keep them for a bit but I think they will probably go on ebay fairly soon. Probably doesn't help you but you never know.
Unless of course you want a couple of Jap waterstone to buy lol. :D In that case they are mustard and PM me.

It looks great!

If uou not entirely happy about the sharpness, why not start a thread on here :D

oh god no! i have heard the rumours (hammer)

Looks very smart. Make sure you ease the arris/edges of the sole with a file and a bit of 240 grit, nothing spoils your day like putting a dent or a deep scratch in a beautifully prepared piece of furniture. You should be able to rub your hands all over the sole and sides without feeling any sharpness or roughness (apart from the blade obviously!).

Another vote for the ultex stones - up to 1200g with them, then a few strokes on a old natural stone I've picked up from somewhere thats super fine and strop on leather. Works for me!

No need for a thread. We all sharpen with an EDM. I'd look used on ebay, preferably something with enough power to burn through a metal light pole.

ah yes, its all as smooth as a baby's bottom :) I filed the edges and finished with 240. I just need to get a crisp edge so ill spend some time on that this evening. I ended up with a veritas honing guide mk2 and i'm not sure what the previous angle was, but it sure wasn't 25 so i had to regrind with 120 grit.

Keep an eye out on ITS.co.uk for their diamond plates. Excellent piece of kit that I would highly recommend. They regularly come up on sale for about £12 each. I bought a 300g, 600g and 1200g set for less than £40 delivered a few months ago!
