chisel, my mate has just bought a 718 and he thinks it is the dogs
gonnads, and i have a 708 with which i am very happy.

suggest you try them in a proper shop not a garden shed.

reason i say this is that some of the motion may be to do with
the various tightening and other screws being loose.

on the 708 there are a couple of screws holding the rails straight,
and the fence too. so that might be the problem.

i do agree that dewalt are apparantly less well made, but
do not think this should be the case.

also have you tried the bosch machines, others seem to like it.

Haven't been able to find the Bosch machines in stock anywhere local Paul, so can't comment on them.

Interestingly, it ocurred to me, looking at websites again, that the Makita I was looking at in B&Q was actually probably the older 10" model, and the new 12" model looks like it doesn't have the ugly painted fences but nice polished ally ones which would be an improvement.

Likewise the websites mention fixed angle detents on both models which I didn't notice when I was playing with the saws, so probably best take my views with a pinch of salt as (as always !) in case I got anything else wrong

Have also been wondering whether I would be sensible in upgrading my existing DW703 to the DW712 which actually has less depth of cut ! Of course you get the much greater crosscut capacity, but even so...... :?

Probably ought to wait for one of the shows and compare some of the models more carefully and as you say make sure they have been set up properly to start with, which could well be part of the problems as you say.

Cheers, Paul. :D

hey paul no hassle.

one important thought, the 708 is b****y heavy so think about
how often you are going to use the capacity, since i think the
718 is the same kind of weight, and it also takes up bundles of
room. in fact i think, although it is thinner, my 708 probably
takes up as much footprint as the 744 table saw, and when on
the stand even more. the value of the 708 to me though is cutting
bits for narrow bookshelves square more easily than on the
table saw, which is why i am making a sled and dust collection
on the 744. still that's another story.

if you can wait does not the yandles show have some machinery on
view, or there is kempton park in october.

anyway good luck
paul

Thanks all, I went for the Bosch GCM10SD and the Wolfcraft 6137 stand.

Not actually powered it up yet so i'll update at some point on that. So far im impressed.... it's HUGE! The saw coupled with the stand makes the whole thing not very mobile at all. But that's ok, i'm not going anywhere ;)

WiZer

Just bought the GCM10S for use on site was lucky to get it at a Bosch promotion day, the saw came with a free Bosch GTA3700 stand magic piece of kit. :D :D

How do you find the dust extraction on the saw with the collection bag, mine seems to throw the dust everywhere but in the bag.

Les

honestly? .... I haven't turned it on yet

The workshop build date keeps getting pushed back

That just about sums it up, yep. Having positive extraction from a vac is a bit better, but they're just a nightmare to extract from I fear - 'tis in their slidey nature. :(

Cheers, Alf
