Jenx what you describe is unnecessary as a system is already in place, the coppers use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) which checks every number plate it sees automatically and will tell you if anything is amiss. Gets round all of the documentation problems, means coppers don't have to individually inspect and check on cars and also picks up people who get insurance on monthly payment, get their cover note and then cancel.

Watch Traffic Cops or Road Wars - and if you watch enough of them you'll see what happens when coppers pursue car thieves onto a "traveller" estate/field, ie they leave the scene as fast as they can

But that assumes that the police are present. In Oryx's case they weren't and so if the travellers haven't got any insurance then he's no step further to a resolution unless the police get of their backsides.

BTW - I'm assuming it's the travellers who leave the scene as fast as they can?

No it's the police, they get the crims and then get out quick. The ones on the telly weren't afraid to get stuck into the coppers

Exactly my point.
If they're not ... the problem very much exists, as highlighted.
A change in the methodology cures it 100%.
And in the majority of incidences, they're not present.

Yes, I appreciate what you're saying there... however, that system isn't doing very much about the 1 in 3 0r 1 in 4 ( or whatever it is.. its one or the other ).. uninsured vehicles on the roads of Britain.

It has its place in assisting to solve a crime in certain instances, of course.. but as I said, its totally ineffective about this massively widespread problem of uninsured vehicles.

And .. the idea I floated does of course, come down to the implementation of much harder penalties than those which exist currently.
The deterrent is unfit for the offence ( as with most illegal activity of course ).
Its just not treated severely enough to deter people from doing it.

Hi I/B ... that is the 'key phrase'.
Forgive my Uber-cynicism... but its feasible that a scenario is 'open to embellishment' for the Telly.
A more 'lame' script wouldn't be anything like as 'marketable'.

Telly is for entertainment.
Real-life unfolds before the eyes.
