Ladies and Gents,

My uncle asked me to see if any of you had any good or bad experiences of hydraulic log splitters - Brands to avoid / buy. and power level required.
I told him to get the maul out, but he's recognising he may be getting past that stage soon.

Any thoughts?

TIA

Greg

I use a Mitox log splitter, it does the job with no drama and copes easily with logs 25cm diameter. I am happy to recommend it. It cost around £270 online from Mowdirect. If your uncle wants to split thicker logs he will probably need to spend a lot more money. There are also cheaper electric splitters on the market, around £200 or a bit less which are less powerful, but probably still perfectly adequate for small logs.

Best thing I ever bought for the garden. My back doesn't take to swinging an axe any more.

I have used this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-Ton-Electri ... SwNnRYfzGU

for seven years, splitting about 10 x tonne dumpy bags a year of ash, beech and elm.

Get one with a stand though, it's no fun having to bend down or be on your knees doing the work.

I split up to approx 28 inch diameter log slices with ease. Split, rotate, split again.

I also added a knife to the pushing end, but can't see those advertised at the moment.

we got this one http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/2200w-w ... dl-2528108 a Woodstar when it was on offer at Lidl few months ago. 6.5 ton splitting power, complete with stand, and like Phil said get one with a stand as its back breaking otherwise.... doesn't sound much, but to keep bending to place logs, handle the controls, then collect the split wood....

My brothers got this one https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke- ... -splitter/ from Machine Mart, had it for several years without a problem.

This one from Screwfix http://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb685l ... -5kw/6054p is a good buy, just needs a 'stand'. And if you know anyone with a 15% discount voucher its a steal..!! (i was sent one last week but got no use for it :( )

I think you'll find they're all pretty much 'generic' i.e. they all look (and controls work) the same, apart from the colour... some red, some grey, some black, some green etc etc

Mine will split (like Phils) BIG log sections easily.... when green..!! when left to season.... it will... but with a bit of effort and then might 'pinnnggg' across the driveway...
