As a general point with the table saw, what do you guys think of 'pulling' work through, by that I mean rip cuts on longish pieces.

Start of feeding in the conventional way, then walk to back and pull through. IMO this means any jams, kickback etc, and you are well out of the way. I can think of one disadvantage - unable to reach the NVR switch, but I happen to have a switch on a pillar near the back of the saw.

Is it a good idea :?: Or just plain stupid, BTW I haven't done it....... yet :)

Interesting one this, can't wait to hear the responses.

this method would produce inaccurate cutting, poor quality of cut and the potential to twist a rotating blade (not good), definately not good practice.

As Shivers says, this is an absolute no-no. You have no control over the workpiece as you can neither press the material against the rip fence nor ensure that it is held down against the top of the saw. In addition to that if you do have a kickback you are likely to end up face down on the saw. Anyway, were your saw set-up for safe operation, i.e. with a run-off table the way we trades types are obliged to do by edict, you wouldn't be able to do this.

So yes, just plain stupid (homer) - and at least three of us trades types seem to agree on this (now that's a first, surely?)
