With the influx of new members I was wondering how long we have all been turning. In our club it is noticeable that new turners are often more inclined to experiment than the more experienced ones. I have been turning just over four years. How long for the rest of us?

I started in July so that makes 3 months, but it seems to have consumed my waking hours!
The advice I was given was to do repetitive same stuff again and again to get it right. However, every time I " tick off" a skill I want to build on it and try the next challenge.
I am enjoying the experimentation so from that perspective your observation is correct in my case

Blimey, someone has got to have started before 98??

I started, after thinking that I was never going to get interested in it, in 1995! I started with a Wolf drill driven thing (can't really call it owt else). I quickly bought a Record DL24 and now have a Record CL1 which as I have put in another post, which is now electronically fully variable!! Am I chuffed!!

I must admit to being less 'artistic' than a number of others on here, but I love a new challenge. Thread turning is the latest, I think?

Edit : - Just noticed Pete.. You started this and you ain't put how long you've been hooked???

Oh yes I did. 4 years and I also started with a drill attachment that I was given though I admit to having done it in school ** years ago.

I'm busy with my turnings for 8 years now.
Hate it turning all the time the same, so my goal is to be as much as possible diverse in my turnings.

Hands on as opposed to machine tool turning 5 yrs 5 months, (since May 09, 2005, 11 years after I retired).

First machine turned wood was 1959ish (pattern making). then a big gap between early 1960s and 2005.

Oh heck - first started turning casually in about 1974 while recovering from hand injury, and have been doing so equally casually ever since :)

Though thinking back even further, I did try to rig up a miniature lathe using an old Meccano motor in about 1953...............

First lathe bought for me & me bro in 1978 by our dad, Black & decker drill on a pressed steel frame arrangement & a box set of marples chisels.

Still have it all, but a small gap of 25 years followed till i bought a DVR, though the seeds had been sowed in the mind of a 12 year old.
