We've just got a Panasonic home cinema system. Sounds good, and we no longer have to play CDs through the TV (which is a Sony old-fashioned CRT).

However, if I read the destructions right, I should be able to play the TV audio through the HC kit.

I switch the input to AV and nothing happens. No sound, zilch. The picture is still showing (from our Freeview box) and the TV sound is still on, but nothing at all from the HC. There is only one scart input on the HC box, so there is no choice about that, and I have the red & white co-ax cables connected between HC and TV. There isn't a lot else there. DVDs play correctly.

So where am I being stupid, please?

Hmmm... you shouldn't be far off if I'm understanding correctly. I'd have thought the scart would have done the trick, however, sometimes not all the pins are connected. It tends to be video pins that are sometimes not connected but it may be worth trying another scart in any case.

The other thing to beware of is inputs v outputs and selecting the correct AV (if your TV has many). It should be labelled on the back so check which scart your plugged in to and make sure that is the one selected via the TV remote control.

Hang on a minute - light bulb moment... Have you switched your HC to "TV" from, for example, "DVD"?

I think that I am not getting any output from the TV. I've discovered that if I tap off the sound (using the re & white phono cables) directly from the Humax freeview box, then the sound comes out when switched to AUX. I lose the TV picture though, because that is set on AV.

I think that the sound output on the back of the TV is switched off, but I'm blowed if I can see how to switch it on.

Ah well, it's not the end of the word, but it is rather disappointing.

Thanks
Steve

What is the model number of the panasonic HC box? I may not have understood it all correctly but i would have thought that the freeview would need to be connected to the HC box and then from there to the TV or thats how it should work (i think) but if its only got 1 scart i dont think its possible that way.

OK

The HC is A Panasonic SCPT460 and this is the manual

The TV is a Sony KV28CS70U and this is the manual

It's clear from the Panasonic manual that both the Humax and the Panasonic feed into the TV. There is no direct connection required between the Humax and the Panasonic.

The Panasonic accepts phono input as the AUX channel and this works properly.

The TV also has phono sockets, but these do not produce a signal. This may not be a fault, of course, they may be only inputs, not outputs.

The Scart port on the Panasonic is the AV channel. DVDs play correctly.

The Humax is connected to Scart1 on the TV and the Panasonic to Scart2 (which is also labeled DVD, so that makes sense). This accords with the Panasonic manual.

I've tried a different Scart lead to no avail.

I'm left with the conclusion that the TV is not producing an external sound signal. This is strange, as we used to have a DVD recorder on this setup prior to this machine, and that used to record sound and vision properly. We've not used it to record, however, for the last couple of years, although playback was fine last week.

Short of taking the whole kit round to my neighbour's house I don't see how I can test it.

I think OLD's idea is the best bet, although I don't think it should be necessary.

This is very frustrating!

RTFM..Steve !!

It's there...page 19 connecting to external hifi equipment...apologies if it doesn't work!!

Also you may get lip-sync problems possibly which may/may not be noticeable and/or annoying. IIRC the Humax has audio out and so maybe you can feed this into your home cinema system to get over any lip-sync problem.

Apologies accepted Roger ! :)

Zilch.

However GOOD NEWS!

I'd already established that the phono output from the Humax gave me sound into the Panasonic, but the TV doesn't (even with the TV speakers switched off :) ). The problem was that switching the Pan to AUX lost me the picture on the TV. Why should that be? For some reason, switching the channel to AUX on the Pan also changes the AV channel on the TV. But I can scroll through to get my AV1 again and I get

SOUND AND PICTURE ! Hurray!

It's a bit of a faff because if I switch off, it defaults to a blank screen again - not sure if I can cure that - but at least I've got something resembling what I wanted.

Thank you all very much for your help.

Cheers
Steve

No, lost me there I'm afraid.....could we try this thread again in English? :D

You are in England my friend it doesn`t get anybetter with age either....Well back to school for you then sounds like Electronic`s 101 should do it. :D

I have found that replacing the connecting cables on a home cinema is worth doing for a better picture and sound i get mine from the link in previous post i choose the price one above the least expensive with no complaints remember when you upgrade to a larger tv that you will need a hifi hdmi cable that will replace your hopefully upgraded scart.
