I'd like a bump bar or a kick switch but the off switch on the BRM is digital. Not sure I'll be able to wire something into that.

wire it into the cable that goes from the BRM to the mains - simples

A bump bar is best probably, next best thing is a big red mushroom type off switch that I wired into the wivamac, it has magnets on the back and enough spare wire I can position it anywhere needed on the lathe for easy access and immediate turn-off, positioned usually at hip height so hands free. Gives a lot of piece of mind.

Cheers, Paul :D

yeh could do Pete. It does actually already have an emergency off switch. But the digital read out freaks when I hit it and it takes maybe 20 seconds to sort itself out. I'm too impatient for that ;)

yeah but the clue is in the name - its there for emergencies, not regular use - an in an emergency freaking out the digital read out is better than losing a couple of fingers

yeh I know but I'd like a bigger off switch for stop starting while I'm turning, checking, turning, etc.

I would prefer the footswitch, and did ask Phil Irons about fitting one on the Vicmarc, which he said he would look into.
The nudge bar on the other Vicmarcs apparently take some getting used to,as you, well i do, tend to lean against the lathe and always switching it off, accidently

Well I ordered the big one today at lunchtime from Axi :D sadly though as I used my bank account that I don't often use to pay for stuff, Barclays decided to give me card hassle  and by the time I read the email from Axi telling me, phoned them and sorted it out(by using my business account   thanks Barclays  ) it was too close to 5 o'clock so it looks like it won't be in me hands 'til Wednesday

Still I can be patient........ :^o

Bump bar is both very good and very bad.

Good:
Keep hands on tool when hollowing through small opening so no 'lazy' catches
intuitive & very easy
When roughing log down if you go OTT on the speed and set the bump for light pressure then it turns itself off when the lathe starts a'rockin'! (saves shortening the power cord for a similar feature on other lathes)

Bad
For the first couple of times using the lathe you will lean against it and turn it off by mistake - no big deal.
You get used to using it - I have may bruised knee-caps trying to turn other lathes off!!

Well, my 2 cents

Simon
