Looking to go on holiday early June for a week with 'er indoors and the toddler. Thinking Northern France. Budget is tighter than I would like this year, though - anybody got any recommendations?
Thanks

Si.

Si - If you're looking for a nice beach holiday with interesting towns nearby, you could do a lot worse than Benodet, just to the South of Quimper on the southern coast of Brittany. Not too far to drive once you're over there, and not so far south that the heat is too much for the little 'un. We've been there 3 times. Once as kids when my parents were in much the same position, once with my own kids when they were young and for the same reason, and once a couple of years back with some friends. We hired a gite through Brittany Ferries, and when split between 4 couples with 2 cars, with a self catering gite to sleep 10, it cost us £225 per couple for the ferry crossing Plymouth/Roscoff including the gite for a week.

You could look at the northern coast of Brittany, West of St Malo. It’s usually cheaper if you go a bit inland and then drive to the coast. Several beaches on this coast have plaques commemorating escapes by British and allied servicemen, especially pilots. Also Rennes is quite interesting.

However, people also seem to be far too quick to leave Calais behind. It is an interesting town with some really great restaurants especially round the market square. The sands from there to the west past Boulogne are generally good. Old Boulogne is worth a visit as well. In addition, you can drive or train it to Paris from Calais for a day out!

Wherever you go, have a good time, let’s hope the euro is down and think about taking bikes (with a kid’s seat) so that you can potter around the local villages.
