hello all, my dad has been pestering me for a few years to make a nut and bolt with a hand chased thread in any wood (he's not fussy about that bit  ) I have always put him off as i think its a bit beyond me and i have no means of cutting a 6 sided blank from which i would start to make the nut and bolt- also i know that i need dry boxwood to take a coarse thread of 8tpi ish
well i got hold of some boxwood a couple of years ago and its nearly dry.
Can anyone help me to cut a blank about 9" long by bout 2 1/2" diameter?
i know its a big ask and i need it to be very acurately done as in inacurateness will show up in the final piece.
any ideas?

Its his birthday in january which is when i'm hoping to get it done by.

I don't see why you need a hex blank that long. If you use the Axminster thread cutter as discussed in another thread, produce a long cylinder an inch diameter to cut the thread in, with a larger diameter piece at the end. Cut the thread, then fashion the larger diameter bit into a hexagon. Similarly with the 'nut' - producce the cylinder with a hole the right size for the tap. Tap the hole and then fashion the hex nut round it.

I've never seen hand chased thread in a large pitch - a small pitch on a thing that size just won't look right

I can lend you the thread cutter, if you want to give it a go.

Do you own a band saw with a tilting table and a fence ? that should cut the blank , and :-

How about one of these

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... -21303.htm

should do the trick :p

thanks nick i might take you up on the loan offer.
the reason for the length was two fold- to get two attempts if i make a mistake- and to make it easier to machine, as i presume the shorter the length the hearder it would be.
i have had a long time to think about how to make this and with my limited tools (a lathe and a chainsaw) the only way i can see of getting it right is to start with a full 6 sided length- i understand your idea but i know my dad and it must be perfect.

no i dont have enough room for a bandsaw- i'm not joking when i say i have a lathe and a chainsaw.

thanks for the link but the thread for me is the easy bit and it must be hand chased.

Looks like a forum glitch :?

Hi George

I've had a go at this before just to see if it was possible. I only got as far as the prototype. I turned between centres with chucking point both ends.
Cut off the "bolt" leaving the "nut" in situ ad chased a 10 tpi thread. I found that speed had to be around 300 for this as is was easier that 400 - 450. (I've seen your chasing and you should have no problem with this bit). Then similarly fashion the bolt thread as usual.

I then sanded the faces on the disc sander. If you haven't got one then then I'd mark out six faces with a pair of compasses on the nut/bolt head whilst it's on the lathe and then use a sharp chisel and abrasive to create them. Alternatively make yourself a disc sander and platform for the lathe - that would work as well. I think this is easier than creating a hex black and then getting it centred.

Be interested in the end result. Have you thought about hollowing the inside if the bolt to make a box, similar to Alan Batty?

Good luck with it.
Cheers Dave

George,

This is probably no help at all, but I have a 3/4" thread thingy kit you are welcome to borrow.
I also have a 1" 8 TPI tap ( no die  )

I could get SWMBO to take them to work (Long Lane Med Centre) & you pick up from there?? Or you collect from my house.

Just re-read you original post

My bandsaw will easy do that.
PM me if you want to come over

George,

I should be able to make the hexagon using my router lathe, I made a twelve sided blank for a box with it some years ago.
I just index the blank round and slide the router along for each side.

In fact I have a 1" thread box and tap set that I bought in the Tilgear late summer sale, as it looked like it might be useful sometime.

Or if you fancy a trip to Suffolk you are welcome to come and have a go with my tools for yourself. 8)
