My guess is it's a hot water bottle opener...

I am still stumped!
I have scoured cataloges and see nothing like it

I have seen a tool similar to this , it must have been in the sixties, about 3 ft long, it was used to raise the edge of chequer plate, enough clearance to get a handhold in order to lift it

Edit If I remember correctly, it was on a job in Liverpool at the GKN warehouse in Netherton a firm was putting in a mezzanine floor to extend their storage facility, I was building racking on top of the mezzanine floor.

Hope this helps

No idea what it is, I'll subscribe to the 'wing-nut twiddler' theory for now - cos I could definitely use it for that! In fact I could easily find space for that or a very very close cousin in my 'if all else fails try one of these' toolbox!

Has a certain functional (pleasing to my mind) 'one of many thousand' look about it, so must be a tool that has/had a specific purpose?

This is a bending iron for twisting orthopaedic DCP plates that are used in the treatment of fractured bones by internal fixation i.e. a metal plate is screwed to the broken bone and to get this plate to conform to the shape of the bone it is bent and twisted with a pair of these. They come in pairs and are Swiss in manufacture

I wonder if any oethopedic surgeons ever pocket a couple, so they can undo those stiff wing nuts at home

Hi Geoff-oz and welcome. I knew that I'd seen something similar as the orthopaedic workshop at my previous project used a similarly shaped tool for bending the mild steel bar or aluminium bar for making leg braces / calipers. I think they only used one but they were able to hold the other end in a vice - not something that I guess you can do in an operating theatre - although having seen what orthopaedic surgeons have in their 'tool kits' I'm not so sure

Senior, light fingered orthopaedic surgeons interested in DIY have a large choice of interesting tools to choose from and all in Stainless steel! Here is a small selection
