I'd love to help, but alas really shouldn't!

What time are you picking it up? and when do you think you'll get to the bash?

Well I'm going by machine mart when collecting the van so I think I may pick up a few of these if theyre in stock:
Polypropylene Swivel & Brake 051320095 75mm dia.
They also have a rubber version - no clue which is best.

Then I'll have to do something inventive with those, some 3x3 timber and some 2" screws....fine woodworkers look away now... :p

I plan to pick it up in the morning, but I need to hear back from the guy...may not make it to the bash till after lunch (you don't need to feed me anyhow, I'm only 5 minutes away  ). I'll try to pop in earlier if pickup is delayed...

Just looked into castors for the PT base I'm making...

Solid polypropylene can support a significantly greater weight than rubber* but they have no natural stock absorbtion. I went for 75mm solid castors even though my workshop floor is pretty bumpy - so far everything is looking good.

*
75mm Solid Castoring = 90kg/castor
75mm Solid Fixed = 100kg/castor
75mm Rubber Fixed or Castoring = 50kg/castor

On the other hand, all mine are rubber except the planer and the TS and both are a PITA to move about. I'd use 4" rubber on anything in the future.

Interesting, I'll have to see how I get on. I've made another mobile base with 50mm castoring solids and that's fine for moving about things upto about 100kg. I moved a washing machine up a couple of steps with it the other week - just threw down some sheets of ply and pushed it up. I must admit though that if there is any grit or dirt then solids don't seem as good as rubber. Making all the wheels castoring though is the most important thing I think.

I need some wheels for my pillar drill and my new bandsaw which will be arriving tomorrow!

Thing I always wonder is if the castor is rated for 50kg, does that mean 4 wheels can take 200kg. I feel this is probably very stupid question but I'm gonna ask anyway!

Also I have rubber floor so could I get away with solid wheels?

You should be able to get away with 200kg on four wheels but I always err on the side of caution because the load is unlikely to always be perfectly spread over all four wheels. I would have thought solid castors on a rubber floor should work well.

I wouldn't worry about feeling silly for asking that question. I thought exactly the same thing at first. After pondering it a bit I came to the conclusion that it must be per-wheel otherwise there was no way you could build a trolly strong enough to take most machines even using the largest castors.

In truth all the sets of castors I have seem to be unbelievably strong. I would guess they would take twice their rated weight without any trouble.

thanks for the castor info.
bob, I found the manual - very useful place for old manuals :)

currently, the vendor hasn't bothered to tell me his address or phone number
If he doesn't get back to me its going to be a waste of money hiring the van and I'm going to be....a little peeved.
Unfortunately it also means I'm going to have to hang about all day tomorrow just in case he gives me the tip-off as to where he is located so I can race over in the van and pick it up before the rental has to go back... and if that happens I won't make it to the bash. And if the pick-up doesnt happen tomorrow I've no clue how I will offload it, even if I rearrange the transport. I'm not overly happy at the prospect of it all going pear-shaped through no fault of my own :x

Dan there are a couple of members who live very close to you. Hopefully they can chip in if tomorrow goes pear shaped. Will you loose the entire deposit on the van if you cancel? I'd tell the guy he has to knock that off the saw if he doesn't get back to you in time. You not got a phone number for him? You might be able to get it off ebay.

thank-you guys, you have an answer for everything. I never realised you can get extra info on sellers from ebay on request. Now, between ebay and the mighty google I have his surname, home phone, work phone, mobile, business name, business address, a map and directions, wifes name....

Shame I didn't find out earlier or I would have tried calling him, but I guess he may be getting an early morning wake-up call instead

Anyhow, I'll trundle down in the van and hope to make contact one way or the other... he did say weekend was good so hopefully he isn't planning an all-day trip to the beach!

Hi Dan,

I hope it all goes to plan, but if not, I've got a job to look at in Hastings sometime next week so if you like I could empty my van and meet you there.

Have a good weekend,
Mark.

Same here.

I am not a million miles away, if you are stuck I have a van, and could come and give a hand.

davin

By the way the van is for sale.. ex ,61k full service history, very clean, used as a car, carpeted .......

It's ok guys. Dan managed to get the bandaw all delivered with the help of the ukw likely lads ;)

Yep, I was about to post a final update on here, but decided to put in my thanks for the bash first! I should have guessed wizer would be on the case - thanks ;)

Yep, in the end I got the van from hiremorecar (40 quid plus £8 insurance and a tenner for the diesel), got some load straps and some lengths of wood sorted for later and then dropped into the bash for a little while. A look at the planes, a chat and a cup of tea and then down to Hastings. Got the bandsaw loaded (stood it behind the transit and tipped it onto its back into the van with the help of 2 chaps that end, as suggested on here) and a very cautious drive back, then back to the bash for a little while. Many thanks to Bob and Sara for rounding up a few of the chaps, and many thanks to all the chaps who gave a much needed hand with shifting it out the van and installing it in the shop :D Then I had to dash off and get the van back to the rental place - bit late but he was OK about it :)

It all worked out OK in the end, but I wouldn't have managed it without the advice and assistance of y'all. Thanks :D
