I had a similar problem and the Y-lever plus the pin were worn out, replacement with a set from Workshop Heaven fixed the problem. Cap iron placement I just set it as close as I can until I get accordion shavings and then back it off a touch probably about 0.4-0.5 mm total, thicker shavings will mean you have to increase the gap but it is very much wood and user dependent.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions in this thread.

I switched out the Cap Iron from one of my other planes, and it solved my issue of the blade not retracting. Also set the Cap Iron closer to the blade edge.

The No. 5 is working a treat now... [OK HAND SIGN]
