Surely the radius, if it is a radius, for the inside curve is less than the radius of the outer curve? Think the ends of running tracks.

That's a semi circle and a larger semi circle - the sides of a gouge would be parallel, like the two brackets (( - only the edges would be angled inwards, the actual cutting edge would be the same curve whichever side it was on, just shorter on the inside.
Feel free to prove me wrong, it's only the way I see it. :D

Thinking back to the running track. The radius of the curve changes, from inside to outside, by eight track widths. If the inner and outer track radii were the same then the straights would have no track widths. In my head anyway.

Mike,
Don't know if there are any flea/antique fairs in your area, but wanting to try carving myself I picked up a job lot of 12 mixed carving chisels and gouges at the Malvern fair on Sunday for £20. Including a Marples out cannel gouge identical to your ebay link and 2 in cannel ones amongst others.

Yes. The radius of both sides of the gouge (assuming constant thickness) is the same.

You're missing the bevels, folks. The suggestion was to leave the in cannel in place, and just start honing a bevel on the outside. Well , the resulting cutting edge will move from the outside of the thickness of the steel, to, eventually, the inside of the thickness. The radius of those two extremes differs by the thickness of the steel.

I haven't seen a car boot/ flea market/ antiques fair in this area during the winter, but I'll look out for one.

No, it starts with the radius of the outer surface, and ends up parallel, but with the radius of the inner surface. Obviously the latter has a smaller radius than the former.

I just though of something else phil. If you draw two concentric circles the inner radius is different, smaller, than the outer.

Going from in-cannel to out-cannel isn't too arduous with a power grinding wheel or linisher, it's no different to re-profiling a turning gouge. But going the opposite direction would be a nightmare!
Yep, I'd agree; difficult and time consuming but not impossible. I've turned a number of out cannel's into scribing gouges by using a small grey conical grinding wheel in a Proxxon mini drill. Square off the end first of all and then start grinding; takes an hour+ :( with much frequent dunkings in water.
Grinding the internal bevel is relatively easy but honing is the really tricky bit as you need to keep the edge straight and the corners square. I find a tiny pink grinding wheel in the Proxxon seems to do the trick and the edge can then be refined further using the leather wheel on the Tormek as well as the profiled honing wheels - Rob

Right, I've finally been successful and a pair of gouges are winging their way across the country to me as we speak. Obviously, I've never sharpened a gouge, so can someone tell me about angles etc. Both of these look like they've been abused, so I'll be re-establishing a bevel with my linisher set up.

Maybe a bit premature in the renovation process but I wonder if these might help? Saw them while looking for wheels for the lidlaldi grinder/burnisher conversion malarkey yesterday morning.
I phoned the fella from the above firm about an hour ago to see if I could add a clearance item I had missed to my order if it hadn't already been sent. He could! Very nice and obliging fella. Couldn't do more to help even on my paltry little purchase. Might be worth a quick phone call. Will definitely be using them/him again. He won't be retiring on the money I spend but little things like that really cheer me up in a world where every third shop is now a tax dodging corporate behemoth that wants to charge you 4 quid for a coffee and thinks that writing your name on a paper cup inspires brand loyalty.

*Me at 6 am in said coffee shop when there is no other caffeine shops available at that hour*
Name?
Why?
I need to write it on your cup so we know it's your coffee.
We're the only people in here.
Name?
But. Literally. It's just me and you. There's two of us. And my lads, and I know their names.
I need your name. For the cup.
F* Off.
Pardon Sir?!
Volkov. Ivan Volkov. Russian parents. *shrug and smile.*
Ok. And what would you like to drink. Sir.
Black coffee please. *points at middle cup* That size please.
Americano?
What.
Americano?
I have no idea what you are saying.
Your coffee sir.
Again. I have no idea. 1 black coffee please in a that size cup. *points at second smallest cup*
Grande Americano?
I'm not saying it.
A venti?
FU.
Say it.
No. FU.
Say it and I'll give you a Venti for free.
Right. Give me a black coffee in that size cup or I'm going to hop over the counter there and show you what prolonged exposure to steam will do to your eyes. We clear?
*Realises* Yes Mr Volkov.
What did you say to me?!??!!?

My workmates...
'Every fuc*ing morning.....'
