Over the years I have had many, many skips and never had a problem. Indeed, if there was any problem it was that the skip company were phoning up asking when they could have their skip back!

But now I have a problem. I have had a skip on my driveway now for 5 weeks. It was finished with 3 weeks ago, but no matter how many calls we make, they promise to collect it but never do.

Any ideas as to what I can do? Violence & threats are not an option, it has to be legal 8)

Send them an invoice for storing it. £20 per day seems reasonable to me.

I'd ask Citizen's Advice or your local Trading Standards people. It may be the business is in the process of going bust.

Or phone and say thanks for the earlier call you missed about picking it up and yes its fine to get it on friday

That's what is so great about this forum :D

I would never have thought of phoning them up like Rorschach or Droogs suggested. Sneaky

If it doesn't go today, I'll try that tomorrow. Perhaps suggest someone knocked on the door asking if I wanted it taken away?

In my limited experience, scaffolding companies are just the same. Eager to get their kit out where it will be earning, not so keen to get it back to the depot.
Understandable but annoying!

It's a method that can work wonders.

A good while ago something was stolen from us. I know who did it and when but I had no proof.
I contact their employer but of course it was one word against another. I told them that if it was returned, no charges would be pressed (police had already been useless and said there was nothing we could do, but they didn't know that).
After a week I contacted them again to thank them for the return of the item (it never came back). The person whole stole it was questioned obviously and protested by saying "they are lying, I never gave it back"
Dropped themselves right in it #-o

We never did get the item, I assume they had to dispose of it once they knew they were rumbled, and the employer obviously did not have enough evidence to fire them, but they will always be known now as a liar and thief.

Sometimes you need to approach things from a different angle.

But isn't it different with skips? I've paid up front, so wouldn't it be in their interest to collect it so that they can hire it out again?

They may have lost their waste licence, this happened to a skip company we used, had a skip for 6 weeks at work. In the end they contracted another compoany to pick it up.
If they lose the licence they cannot move waste, can be temporary or permanant depending on how naughty they have been. The company we used had not been disposing of waste in the correct manner.

They are both keen to help at first when you might take your business elsewhere but afterwards you go to the back of the queue.

I had the same problem with a skip full of concrete, they came round eventually and put it on top of another full skip, threw a strap across the top and drove off, it looked very top heavy.

ring a different skip company and ask if they would like a free skip.......

I did think of that, but they would also want cash for disposal.

If it's got a company name on it like "Property of SoandSo Skips" I would just drag it out onto the road (Without blocking the road with it too much) and when the police come around after somebody has complained about the skip, just say "Oh it belongs to SoandSo, Nothing to do with me". Then the police will harass SoandSo to pick up their skip.

You'd be amazed how much you can get away with by pleading ignorance.

Is it full because I've got a mattress to get rid of...

. I haven't it's a lie, but skips always have mattresses in them, perhaps having one is a requirement for removal?
