David C says the Axminster Titemark clone is not very good at all, but why? I had a look at the realone and the copy, and as far as I can see the only difference is in the screw that fixes the wheel to the shaft.

As a matter of interest, the shaft diams are identical and both LN replacement, and mortice cutters, will fit.

Ivan,

There is an ogee curve just where you want to apply pressure with a finger on the stock. (The ergonomic point).

The action and machining of the sliding parts is crude and sticky.

They are not by any means useless but not nearly as well made.

David, there's a plastic grubscrew fitted into the body, which is supposed (I guess) to stop the shaft dropping out. This is probably the stiction culprit, and easily removed, as I undid the one I inspected, which then moved freely and without looseness. Something sprung loaded would work better, (and might easily and cheaply be arranged.)

Although LN sell shaft extension kits for wide gauging, you'd think the body might be a bit small for this. I'm surprised that no one has suggested fitting it with a nice big (rosewood ) wooden fence....

As I said in my comments on it - if you haven't used a TiteMark it's absolutely fine. If you have, you're likely to have issues.

You going to be the first with the rosewood fence then, Ivan? We'll want pics... :D

Cheers, Alf

I seem to have lost a paragraph when copying into 'post a reply'.

The two I bought from Tilgear, recently on sale, also had stiction from small burrs along the V grove edge, which was removed by a pass or two of 600 grit slipstone.

What should I do with the dosh saved on these, then Alf?

Rob,

I thought I was the only fan of the 5061 in the world.

It clearly had one of the only design improvements ever.

i.e. clamping on the diagonal so no head wobble due to changing humidity.

Shame it was made and promoted so badly.

This may interest "some"...

http://v3.espacenet.com/textdoc?IDX=US2 ... &DB=EPODOC

It's the original (UK) "diagonal" patent.

Here's the USA equivalent

http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php ... country=US

Doh! ](*,) same patent, just in diffferent databases!
