Looking thru' one or two members web sites I sometimes see details about 'free web hosting' etc where a site can be produced for no cost. Can anyone recommend a good one that I could have a dabble with? Having just loaded Norton and all its works thru' the cybershredder and replaced it with a suite of free 'puter protection stuff lifted off t'internet (AVG etc) I'm hoping that something similar might be available so I can have a reasonable web site......but then again, the sceptic in me is advising that there's no such thing as free munchies :)
So, does anyone have any experience of any good free sites for web hosting with maybe a blogging facility? Many thanks - Rob

Thanks for the replies....will have a go with the 'freewebs' stuff and see how I get on, hope I can get it as good as Philly's or Alf's, probably not :( but worth a punt  - Rob

Most ISPs have an agreed amount of space for a website included with your internet package. You can uplaod using ftp. Normally more than enough space for a website.

Be careful with free websites and hosting, even more so if they offer unlimited everything and free domain names.

A lot of these use whats called Apatche server and other projects that open source, they say its free, well it is but for a small amount of time spent you can turn your own computer to do what they are offering.

What alot of them are doing is offering free space etc etc and its all controlled via there professional looking website, the realality of this is its just some one using there home unsure and un reliable computer, personal information is not secure.

Anyone can do this infact i have set a few of these systems up and it takes around 5 hours for the job lot and just 5mins to get your computer to host websites free of charge.

Like i say if its a business site or something you are bothered about don't do it, the computer its hosted on will not be very secure, there internet line is a standard ADSL, DSL home broadband pipe line.

Ones that are offering unlimited everything, this is impossible unless they have warehouses full of servers, if say one computer has 500 mailbox emails to sort out the computer will be very slow, so it only takes 500 people signing up to one of these providers to bring the system to its knees.

Ones that offer free Domain names are normally a scam, they offer you it, let you use it but never register the domain to you, if you start trading using this domain name they will put a price tag on it.

Ill not blind you with the sciance of it, i will say be wary and don't use them if you have to give personal information or if you plan on trading using the free host.
