Just use Avast or AVG - both are free to download, update and to use for as long as you like :D

And in my opinion a lot better than Norton etc :D

I been using AVG for 3 years works great recommended by a computer boffin i know. i found it doesn't slow my surfing down as much norton that i tried a about a year ago.

Norton is a real pain when it comes to slowing your computer down. I uninstalled it from one of our systems and replaced it with AVG and the speed increase was truly amazing! You do have to clean up all the registry entries and other cr*p that Norton puts on your machine to get the best improvement, but it's worth it. Viruses get through Norton more often than AVG from what I've heard from others (including my son-in-law, who is an Internet Security consultant and uses AVG on his home network).

The worst A/V imho for slowing your system down is Computer Associates.... Kills it stone dead for any networked applications that use shared printing - especially if one of the printers goes offline!

Norton and MacAfee are probably the worst pieces of software to have graced humankind.

AVG and Avast are free, lightweight, more secure and are updated on a daily basis. You know it makes sense.

from what ByronBlack, White House Workshop and my experience I think Norton should be reclassified as a virus, it seams to have the same effect. :) leaves pop ups, leaves software around on your computer after getting rid of it.

don't get me started on AOL

Norton can never be classified as a virus. Its both huge in size and detecable as soon as its beeing installed. :D

The mentioned free scanners are very good followed by McAfee. Norton however its a decent scanner all the programs with in the Norton brand are crap, slow, bulky, makes the computer somewhat instable and leaves a mees behind.

I'll vote for AVG for free too :D and damnation on Norton  at a cost of hundreds over the past few years  :D

Been using AVG free for several years now with no problems. Mind you my connection is so slow thay any viruses probably die of old age before they can reach my machine

I can get the full norton package through my ISP but am using Avast through experience and highly recommend it ... along with AVG which I use on annother PC. Although I do have to wonder what on earth people are dooing to get all these viruses, after a decade of surfing I have only had a couple and to be honest I know which dodgy sites they came from. I have always been extremely protective of my e-mail accounts and recieve no spam, anything which I believe might lead to spam gets one of my "disposable" account addresses and should I get any spam the account gets deleted. One of the worst things to get you spam, is the forwarding to group e-mail contacts thing, where "humourous" e-mails get sent around, eventually someones e-mail client will get compromised and you are in their address book and the"virus" will send the whole address book out and spam here we come.

I used to use AVG (it has the freeware brand image and mindshare of most users who do not question or seek alternatives) but removed it from all my family PCs after a couple on web hijacks got through my mother in law's. After a few hours of intensive web research reading informed assessments by reviewers who actually tested each offering, I downloaded and tried avast (advil) and Antivir (Avira). I settled on Avast as it had a better email scanner than Antivir. When installed it immediately picked up and sorted the infected files on my MIL PC.

links and reviews for the main free and paid for apps are on this page:

there are others -NOD32 if i were to spend money

I think a virus got through AVG last week on my PC, thats what my pc supplier said anyway.

I'm not sure that I'd believe that. Why go through all the pain of trying to get to grips with a different set of software?

Hang on, Pete...there's another byte coming along soon

Its a pity that Apple/Mac dont produce a product that just accepts email/web and then we could use that instead of pc for above.

Or do they?

I used AVG free for several years but Imy understanding is that it is now only free for a 30 day trial and to be completely protected you have to buy the latest software. It is still good value and in my opinion better than Symantec, if you have a query with AVG you can talk to someone on the phone...with Symantec you have to send an email that gets ignored!
