There is an amazing free 3D package called Blender. I've not used it for a while, but you can get some stunning results.
On the plus side, it'll run on Linux, Mac, or windows. On the downside it's not the most intuitive bit of software. No idea how appropriate it is for technical drawing either. But, might be worth a look...
