hi all. first time on the site. i want to make a set of framed ledge & braced gates, i was hoping someone would have drawings or diagrams to show me the rebating and mortice and tenon set up many thanks dave.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum. :)

I don't have any drawings to hand, I'm afraid. I wouldn't worry about the rebates too much as you can also rout them out after you've assembled the door, using a bearing-guide cutter! However, the thickness of your boarding will determine the finished size of the bottom rail (possibly the middle rail as well depending on your design.)

 This has also been posted on the General Forum :!:

It's a simple construction. T&G boards are usually 12-18mm. Run a rebate up both stiles to suit the boards you have. Also run a rebate along the top rail. The middle and bottom rails should be wide and thinner, so that they will sit flush with the rebate, and the boards can lie on top.

Tennon the top rail, with a hanch. Tennon the middle rail with a double tennon and a haunch in the middle. Tennon the bottom rail, with a double tennon, middle haunch and an end haunch. All tennons should be glued and wedged.

The braces should be the same thickness as the middle and bottom rails. I tend to fix these in using corrugated fastners and glue.

Secret Nail the T&G boards, paint or stain, or whatever finish your hoping for...... just on the tongues and grooves, this means if the boards decide to shrink a little, the gaps don't become unsightly.

Also if your using T&G boards with the V groove, run your router around the door stiles and head, and around the edges of the ends and top of the boards.

I hope all that helps,
Simon.
