Hi all

Have been developing my lidded forms. Most of what I do at the moment is low forms and I wanted to go a bit more contemporary so have included a tall simple form with an offset hole.

The idea behind this one and that I included a chilli is to show where I get some of my inspiration from and the fact that everything around us can be a potential source. Food for thought seemed like a good title.

The chilli red suited the black enbonised base which is chestnut ebonising spray and over the top satin spray ( I said I would never use sprays) perhaps I am being seduced by the dark side

These are being made now in various sizes and colours with various finials and I will show you some more later where I have started to include silver wire.

This idea has also been developed into a bowl again will post when finished.

Comments welcome. Obviously the chilli was to show the idea of different forms and ideas. It will be changed to something that would last later.

comments welcome. Is it hot or not !! ok so I am no good at jokes lol

Is that a real chilli? If not it's a really, really good wooden chilli :D

As for the overall look of the piece - I like it a lot. Very unusual and memorable.

P.S. I hate chilli in food, I prefer to eat things that don't hurt me.

Thank you for your comment

Thank you for your comment. Yes it is a real chilli. I have a few other ideas for using exotic fruits in these ideas as you say to be a bit different but am having difficult getting hold of them at the moment. The recession has meant even my local waitrose has gotten rid of a lot of interesting fruits etc.

I wanted to show that anything can be used for inspiration and ideas.

A star fruit would look pretty amazing (and they are so disappointing to eat), as would a lichee (much nicer to eat).

Mark that is fantastic.

I have been sitting here looking at it for the last 15min, I dont know what it is about it but it just is, it is beautiful, and I dont like chillis.

It is a pity the chilli wont last, to replace it can I suggest you carve and paint a replica of the chilli.

I dont say this very often but that is a piece I would love to own.

 (george has been shaking his head smirking ever since opening this thread)

brillant form- how tall is it?
is the off set natraul wood an insert?
if the ebonized wood is the same wood as the insert (beech i think? but not dark dorset beech  ) i would have liked to have seen two or three natraul woods groves near the base- this would help tie the brain into the black part being wood and link the whole piece together.

brillant Mark :D

Hi all

Thank you very much. I am in a rush to take my littlen out to tennis.

George it is made of Sycamore But has been coated with cellulose sanding sealer so it has darkened it a bit.. 280mm tall by 100mm dia.

The insert is from the end of the piece.

I hear what you say about the grooves but I am going to keep it as it is ( sorry matey but thank you for the idea) as I wanted it to be very contemporary. I have trouble fiddling so kept it as simple as possible.

I am happy with it as my new range and have been oput and brought different coloured car paints to make some tio sell at an rshop where my wife works. Hopefully the punters will like them as much as you guys do.

Thank you all very much again

I may thought George take on your idea though and put it on a shquare sycamore base and that will tie it in.

Thank again

Mark, what a mind you have to see such beauty and be able to reproduce it from timber and a chili is fantastic. You dont ever have to be able to tell jokes when you make pieces like that. Looking fwd. to more. REgards Boysie

Stunning looking piece Mark. :D
Plain and simple, but looks very classy
I was once of the opinion similar to you about painted pieces, but am also seeing the benefits

Lightweeder.

Thank you very much. I enjoy this sort of thing very much, the creative side that is. I was having a creative block a while ago and went away on holiday. This design along with others came to me while I was away relaxing. It is amazing what a few beers can do. lol

I was of the opinion when I first started turning "I am never going to use colour on wood, how horrible that is to ruin the wood with paint".

I have found that this can be restrictive and now I look at wood more a just a substrate than an entity in it's self.

I have found now that using colour is so much fun and am a bit addicted to it. After experimenting with this one that is. I have also been experimenting with stone paint and other bits and pieces and will post some pictures when the results are better.

I think I will just stick to one colour though at this stage.

Thank you all again

That is a sublime example of fine artwork IMHO.
I do admire your ability to be able to see sideways, particularly in design.
I also agree with you about looking at wood as a subtrate and have no problems with colouring.
After all, a lot of turners on this forum ebonise wood. Is not that a form of colouring?
There are some purists that regard the putting of anything on wood as sacrilege but then isn't everyone is entitled to their opinion?.
I salute you for your artistry. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Mark, what can i say that has'nt already been said....................
I don't know any words to describe it.......................
so i'll let the emoticons say it for me............
:tongue9: =D> \:D/ (hammer) :eek:ccasion5: :D
keep up the great work.

You've done it once again Mark. Ain't letting 'er indoors see this one. (Not even started making the copy of your last one yet) :-$

Love the design, elegant, unobtrusive, yet with that little quirk of the off centre lid, and flash of real colour just to draw the eye to it. No idea what you where trying to do design wise, but it has really worked for me, and I can see quite a few other ideas branching out from this one. =D> =D> =D>
