Hi, Lurker

Haven't been to car boots much this year, and found nothing when I went.

Hock bits? haven't you made your own blades yet?

Hi,

Its probbaly in the same place as mine, behind all the things I have to do for other people first, can't seem to get round to doing some thing I actually want to do, rather than have to do.

The final photo is the base, in the end i wasn`t happy with the wet & dry route, i wasn`t getting the results i wanted (it was probably me  ). So i went back to my engineering mate, who gave me a black paste to use instead of wet & Dry ( don`t know what it`s called) but it was a revelation. It showed up all the high points & in no time at all i had the sole dead flat, which even for me was obvious as the plane stuck to the paste & grinding surface more & more the flatter it got.

What was your "grinding surface" ?

Thanks for all the positive comments.

I ground it on a cast iron machine bed, though not on one of my machines i hasten to add

I took the plane tonight to show the friend who`d given it me. He was most impressed, so much so he trundled off into his shed & returned with this.

From what i can make out it says "May", then another word under May, but i can`t quite make out this next word. This is written under the thumb screw on the front cap, can anyone shed any light on this plane & its maker?

Possible a craftsman made plane, I have something similar. I was looking at that wrong (blame the red wine), your blade is fine - I was looking at the cap iron

Any chance of another pic of those holly handles? And where did you source your holly? I've never seen it for sale - not that I really look

Doug - nice one, I love the new tote and knob. Coupled with the Hock blade I'm sure its a fantastic plane

Right-ho.

I think you were using either Silicon carbide grit, possibly in grease.
Called "lapping grit" here:

Anyway, your process will have been grinding away your "grinding surface" at the same rate as your plane (why wouldn't it?)

This means (if you continue) you won't have an (accurate) grinding surface any more :-(

So there you go Doug. Nice work.

Up to a point, the older the plane the better it will fettle, having regard to the cast parts of the plane.

The replacement blade was a good idea, and your plane looks to perform well. Much as I like the newer, expensive planes now you have this, any LN, Veritas, or Clifton plane would just be overkill.

I am sure this one will serve you well for some time to come.

Regards
John :)

Once again thanks for the comments.

As requested by A.J.Rimmer BSC  a few more piccys of the handles.

The Holly is quarter sawn, air dried & came from Elston sawmill. A fairly local mill that is operated by the owner, a really helpful chap who supplies mainly woodturners & violin makers needs, with native timbers.

Hi Jim.

Forgot to say before, i got the Hock blade & cap iron form Classic hand tools Cressington barns show.

All the best.
