Finishing Ebony

Hello all

I’ve just started a small project. Which includes small draw fronts made from solid Ebony. Now the Ebony is black but there is the odd light brown, grey streak which passes through.

Ebony been an oily / grease wood what would be the best way to hide these streaks. Can anybody recommend a type or brand that they’ve has a success with as I can’t afford to mess up and start again.

The ebony that I used for the feet had a lot more brown grain in it than the other bits and the veneer so I gave them a quick spray with Chestnut's "Ebonising Lacquer" This is a black tinted lacquer so the grain pattern still shows through but makes it look black, works well on much lighter wood as well. You can get it from Axminsters.

Liberon do a black shellac polish, I used this on my ebony plane seperators & drawer knobs on my tool cabinet:

I was delighted with it, got 250ml from Axminster.
