Festool Vac (vice / clamping) system

Steve, given that you have seen the vac in action do you think it could effectively replace a traditional vice?

It would seem to be ideal to overcome other workholding problems eg bench top issues and the difficulties of holding thin items, which I seem to continually encounter.

I think if I had one I would fit it into my bench, if that makes sense. I notice that with all the attachments it will cost £1,000, which is too much.

On another note, what are the consequences of getting yourself stuck on it? If that is not a silly question. :? :shock:

It's a tough call. For some kinds of work then yes, certainly. If you are spending all day finishing panels and tabletops, it's perfect, as you can get it into any position without having clamps and stuff getting in the way.

But there is a limit as to how small the workpiece can be. There are two sucker cups you can fit, one round for general work and one long narrow one for pieces such as table legs. But some workpieces would be hust too small and then I don't see any alternative to a trad vice. SImilarly I don't see how it can hold round stock.

You don't need to fix it to the bench, it does that by itself. Magic!

If I may say so, that is an astronomical price for a square of injection-moulded plastic and a length of tubing!

Trend used to make something similar that you connected to your shop vac, I'm not sure if it still exists though.

I think that they also sold kits so that you could make custom vacuum tables.

The Ax device includes a venturi vac pump, (Built in? Separate?) so price is not quite so bad.
