Faulty DVD player

I hope somebody out there can help or give me some pointers.

I have a Sony DVD player, about 5 years old. Basically, it has developed a fault. When the On/Off button is switched to the on position, a red light appears indicating that the unit is in standby mode. Nothing unusual there. However, when you press the open/close button, or the play button, the standby light turns to green - indicating the unit has fired up and is about to do as you ask it to - but after about 5 seconds turns back to red and the unit returns to standby mode. I cannot get it to do anything - all commands result in it returning to standby. Unplugged it. Had the lid off - nothing trapped inside the CD tray.

Any ideas? I don't want to trash it - it cost about £400 new and has served me well up to now.

Probably not much help here but if my freeview harddrive recorder is playing up I revert to default settings and it behaves itself again

I can't be of much help either only to say that my DVD player is like Akwrite's till, every time I open the drawer to place a DVD on it it retracts! Got to be quick with the disks I can tell you. :lol:

I was reading about faulty kit in a mag recently and the advice was its usually faulty capacitors in the power supply due to age and to try replacing them or its to difficult to fix . So look for bulging capacitors is the best you can do.

Karl, I wonder if a repair is really worthwhile - I know you paid a lot for your player 5 years ago but DVD's are now very inexpensive, for instance even Woolworth advertising a Sony for £50!!

Depending on what features you want you should be able to pick up a good quality unit for £50 -100 or even spend a little more and get a DVD recorder (starting around £125). I am guessing here but suggest that it is likely to cost more than £50 for an engineer just to have a look

Hi Tony

I know what you are saying - and if the unit were used solely as a DVD player, I would go for a cheapo.

But it was primarily for audio reasons I purchased it - until recently it formed the "heart" of my av system, costing several grand. So a cheapo just won't do the rest of the system justice (let alone my ears!!!!!)

Think i'll dig the Yellow Pages out tomorrow and look for my nearest repair centre.
