Elu MOF 96 Type 2 - was I robbed?

I've just bought an Elu MOF 96/2 router off ebay for £46 - it works and appears to have been well looked after, but I haven't used it yet.

The seller said it was six years old, which was clearly rubbish as it is made in Switzerland and they haven't been made there for a good few years.

I could have bought a black and decker at B&Q for £43, but went with the romance of the Elu.

Am I a complete mug? Anyone any idea how old it will be?

Also does anyone know where I can get a copy of an MOF 96 instruction manual?

I have 2, a 96 and a 96e. I wouldn't part with either of them for £43. No, they are not fancy, but well engineered; a very useful small router.
I admit the depth stop is better on modern routers, but few have the manufacturing precision.

I wasn't gloating, Dave! I got worried when it was obvious that the bloke selling it had told a porky about the age and tried to cover it up by saying he'd done some research into the age.

It looks like it's at least 10 years old. Is there any age when they start packing up?

Just thank your lucky escape at not buying a crap and decker.I'd have paid that for it.Sometimes you get a dud but that's the risk you take buying second hand from Ebay.Chances are it will be fine.Enjoy!

It's a type 2! I'll check and see if it says A,B or C on it. I seem to recall seeing a box with something like A4A printed on it. Does it make a difference?

I had a play with it tonight, and I am very pleased with it. Very smooth.

I have a elu belt sander thats almost 28 years old,its used regularly and has never had a single problem,not even the brushes.

I bought my Elu MOF96 in the 1970s and it's still going strong. The only thing I had to do was change the carbon brushes. One of the best routers ever made.

Let's see now....... MOF96 (c.1981), MOF177e (c.1995, ghad an even older one, a Typ 1, till someone nicked it), MOF69 (c.1985), MKF67 (c.1985), MH265 (c.1990) and DS140 (c.1980). All used regularly commercially, all PAT tested and serviced/maintained - and ALL in full working order. So yes, I think Elu stuff was made to last

I have an elu that was used in a college for about 15 years, you can imagine the abuse it got!

It runs a dream, I sold the dewalt 625 because I really had no use for it anymore. The Elu is just better all round. I think it is a 177, it has variable speed, it is 110v, and I think it is 1650watt. Some of these routers have a smaller wattage input on 110v than 240v for some reason ( I suspect we may find out why soon!!).

I only have the half inch collet for it, so am interested in the trend 8mm part mentioned earlier in the thread.

Wouldn't swap it for 10 B&D routers!
