eBay reserve price

I can't see a reason for not publicising the reserve, it's there to ensure the seller gets a price that he'll be happy with, it ought not to spoil the auction

Effectively, if you sell an item and charge postage at RM cost, you could lose up to 25% of the sale price in fees after you've taken packaging costs, etc. into account.

At real live auctions the seller's premium is 15% to 25% as is the buyer's premium. Plus VAT, of course, and both are often the higher percentage. So, for all their greed, eBay are still competitive (just).

The difference being that when you attend a "live" auction, you are made fully aware of the fact. Most people just don't seem to realise how much you lose through eBay and eBay don't go to any great lengths to tell you how much it will cost you to sell, for example, a £10 item. Your likely "profit" on a £10 sale will invariably be under £6.
Yes, many buyers have no idea of the cost of selling through eBay or that PayPal also have their cut

The problem I'm up against at the moment is overseas shipping costs. Many items I post have a stamp cost (including "signed for") of around £15 but by the time I've added eBay's 10% (well it's 11% actually to break even) it's up to nearer £17 and starting to attract queries from buyers.

My beef with PayPal is that if you sell something and the buyer uses his credit card via PayPal (as opposed to money in his PayPal account or from his bank account via PayPal) then I get hit with PayPal credit card fees.

Well which one is it

I used to start most things off at 99p to save on fees but got fed up with packaging stuff up and sending it off for 99p when items only made that amount plus the postage. Now i start of at a low figure and if the item is slow i will ask a friend to bid it up, if he gets it we just say to ebay not as advertised to save on fees.

I might be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that somebody got sent down for that a few years ago. Wouldn't really go bragging about it on the internet at any rate.

Hi karl, yes i know its wrong but having a uk workshop name gives me some animosity , so not worried.

Shill bidding, cheating eBay and cheating buyers

Pretty criminal activity and yet you sound proud of it! It's sellers like you who give eBay a bad name.

I hope you get caught.

It could be either. My figures were purely representative :)

I don't sell a lot on eBay but did recently to sell a set alloys and winter tyres that I had bought on eBay in the summer - they didn't fit my car!

I started them at £200 with a reserve of £450 ( the price I bought them for) but they didn't reach that - which was a surprise as they were in pristine condition and had 6mm of tread left - a new set would cost about £1.7k?
Reserving the price added £13 to the fees.

Eventually sold them a on a car forum to someone living locally.

I have to say, My experience of E-Bay has been quite good. Easy, armchair shopping. Country wide exposure for about 11% can't be all bad can it? Selling cheap can attract the stingy whiners and cheapskates. Been caught by a few in the past. so i enter an amount I would be happy to accept as my start price.
I find most people are very good, straight forward, and easy to deal with.
I advertised 'Er indoors car recently in our local rag, struggle to get everything said at a cost of £35.00!
Not 1 call received! Sold on gumtree! instead. FOC!
I wouldn't waste my time either, bidding on something that has a reserve price that the seller would not disclose.
Regards Rodders

Yeh phil thats the word, thanks. Rodger, master criminal me ! just don't want to give stuff away, 9 times out of 10 items reach a good price.

Sawdust

Look at my last post here

ebay-again-t75444.html

It actually happened in Devon.

I'm sure with your attitude some members on this site would find it difficult to want to help you with any woodworking problems.

I've sold a few things on ebay and not got the best price on some, but that's the way it goes. A "friend" once tried to do me a "favour" by bidding on something I was selling, to boost the price  . This was without my knowledge and I made sure he paid for the thing at the price he bid. I wouldn't want someone to do this to me so I wouldn't want to do this to anyone else either.

eBay will do nothing, they encourage shill bidding to 'bump' the price up!

Baldhead,

I'm afraid you're probably right that Ebay will do nothing, but that doesn't mean we need to tolerate him here. Public shaming, accompanied by assorted light beatings, was the way communities dealt with reprobates in the not so dim and distant.

Assuming the particular individual wasn't winding us up, I'd say give him/her time to reflect and maybe see the "error of his/her ways". If not, I think showing that we won't accept such an attitude is an excellent idea (hammer)

Ebay does have more +'s than -'s for me anyway, but I find it's full of tyre kickers.

Items I've had for sale recently have had quite a few watchers, but it only ends up with a couple bidding.

A mate of mine had a car for sale a few month back, & had 128 watches, at the end of the auction not one of them bid
